Leading

By Alex Ferguson

  • Paperback
  • £9.99

An inspirational book about leadership from the most successful British football manager of all time.

'One of the World's all-time great leaders'
Professor Anita Elberse, Harvard Business School

What does it take to lead a team to world-class success over a sustained period of time?

Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the few leaders who truly knows. In his 38 years in management, Sir Alex won an astonishing 49 trophies and helped grow Manchester United into one of the biggest commercial brands in the world.

In this inspirational and straight-talking book, Sir Alex reveals the secrets behind his record-breaking career.

LEADING is structured around the key skills that Sir Alex values most highly. It includes subjects we immediately associate with his managerial style: Discipline, Control, Teamwork and Motivation. But it also addresses subjects that are less obvious but no less important when seeking success: Delegation, Data Analysis and Dealing with Failure.

Written with the investor Sir Michael Moritz, a longstanding friend of Sir Alex, LEADING is packed with insight, wisdom, humour and honesty. The individual stories inevitably concern themselves with football, and the phenomenal success that came along the way, but the lessons can be applied by anyone. Whether you run a business, teach in a classroom, or work in a small team, LEADING will help you become a better leader.

Biographical Notes

Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson was born in 1941 in Govan, Scotland. A goal-scoring centre-forward, he was later transferred to Rangers, the club he supported from boyhood, for a Scottish record fee of £65,000.

Entering management in 1974, he served East Stirlingshire and St Mirren before guiding Aberdeen to victory in the 1982-83 Cup Winners' Cup. Arriving at Manchester United in 1986, he brought them 38 trophies, including the Club World Cup, two Champions Leagues, 13 Premier Leagues and five FA Cups. His overall haul of 49 trophies made him the most successful British manager of all time.

Knighted in 1999, Sir Alex announced his retirement in 2013, when United were again crowned Premier League champions. At the age of 73, he continues to serve United as a director.

In 2012 Harvard Business School created a case-study based on Sir Alex's managerial career: Sir Alex Ferguson: Managing Manchester United, and Sir Alex is now a Fellow to the Executive Education Program at Harvard.

Sir Alex has published three previous books, the most recent of which, Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography became the fastest selling Non-Fiction hardback since records began, when it was published in 2013.

Sir Michael Moritz

Sir Michael Moritz was born in Cardiff, studied Modern History at Oxford and began his career as a journalist at Time magazine in the US in the late 1970s. It was during this period that he met the young Steve Jobs and began work on the first book about Apple, The Little Kingdom: the Private Story of Apple Computer, which was published in 1984 and has become an industry classic. Moritz co-wrote a second business book, Going for Broke: The Chrysler Story, before changing career in 1986 and joining Sequoia Capital, based in the heart of Silicon Valley, California.

Sequoia Capital's close alliances with young founders have been transformed into companies now worth nearly $1.5 trillion - the most of any private, investment firm in the world. These include the first investments in companies such as Apple and Cisco and, more recently, YouTube, AirBnB, Dropbox and WhatsApp. Michael Moritz has been a member of the Board of Directors of a variety of companies including Google, Yahoo!, PayPal and LinkedIn. His work at Sequoia helped him achieve the number one listing in Forbes "Midas List" of the top dealmakers in the technology industry in 2006-7, and a place on the 2007 "Time 100 list".

In 2009, almost thirty years after it was first published, Moritz revised and expanded his book on Apple in The Return to the Little Kingdom. In 2012 he became chairman of Sequoia Capital. In 2013 he was appointed KBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for his services to promoting British economy and his family's philanthropic work includes the formation of Europe's largest scholarship programme for low income university students. The son of refugees from Nazi Germany, he lives in San Francisco with his wife, Harriet Heyman.

LEADING is about leadership, management and the pursuit of success. It's a fantastic book, one of the best of its kind. The defining quality of Ferguson and Moritz's book is its clarity. The pair discuss leadership from a purely practical perspective, their raw material being Ferguson's vast experience. If there's one word, though, that characterises his philosophy of management it's discipline... And yet what comes through very strongly is humility, even vulnerability.
Every success of his, you realise, has been hard-won. Failure has been a constant threat. Nagging anxiety he just accepted 'as part of my job'. And he wouldn't have had it any other way.

— Marcus Berkmann, Daily Mail

For those interested in the subject of leadership, be it managing people effectively and getting the best out of them or learning which qualities and traits separate those who manage and those who inspire, Leading is a worthwhile read.
Football fans might complain that the book is over too quickly, even though Ferguson provides 343 pages of entertaining stories and observations. Structuring his sermons in an easily read format is the latest managerial masterstroke from a man who made a career out of regularly producing them.

— Daily Express
The foundation for its (Man Utd's) success was built by Ferguson, whose near-pathological obsession with football - and with winning - is a case study in leadership. — Lionel Barber, Financial Times
Ferguson is one of the most successful men in his field - not just in football, but any sport in any era. He defied the norms and the scale of his accomplishments will only become more apparent with the passing of time. History will see that Ferguson grows, not diminishes. — Matt Dickinson, The Times
This is as good as Ferguson's last book. Both are about being a particular kind of person... — Independent

Counter Mentor Leadership

Kelly Riggs, Robby Riggs
Authors:
Kelly Riggs, Robby Riggs

For the first time in history, the younger generation has something more to offer an employer than enthusiasm. In the past, a new employee was dependent upon years of service, but now digital technology and social media have exploded into the workplace. The younger generation possess the knowledge and the practical experience to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of social media and digital tools.Unfortunately, most companies, led primarily by old-school Baby Boomers, have tenaciously clung to the old-world order. The reasons are as varied as the companies, but they are all, sadly, proving to be lethal. The technology revolution has impacted more than the new generation of employees. It has created a completely new set of leadership challenges - time compression, complexity, pace of change, and increasing levels of distraction - all created by the tether of technology. The CounterMentor is the new leader who taps into the wealth of knowledge available from the younger generations and lets their company "grow from below." Counter Mentor Leadership will:- Show you how to discuss new workplace dynamics - Explain how to attract and retain the Millennial workforce- Explore the new challenges of leadership inherent with the explosion of technology - time compression, distractions, complexity, pace of change- Detail the CounterMentor leadership model and prescribe specific tactics and techniques for addressing both the old and new leadership issues

Burn The Business Plan

Carl J. Schramm
Authors:
Carl J. Schramm

How would you like to get business startup advice straight from the man who co-founded Global Entrepreneurship Week and StartUp America? Well now you can. Carl Schramm, the man described by The Economist as 'the evangelist of Entrepreneurship', has written a myth-busting guide packed with tools and techniques to help you get your big idea off the ground. Carl believes that entrepreneurship has been completely misrepresented by the media, business books, University programmes and MBA courses. He believes that the perception of what it takes to start a business no longer matches the reality - which is bad news for everyone because it stops great ideas coming to life. Burn the Business Plan punctures the myth of the cool, tech-savvy 20-something entrepreneur with nothing to lose and venture capital to burn, showing that most people who start businesses are juggling careers and mortgages just like you. Burn the Business Plan is written to encourage you to get started. It demystifies the entrepreneurial process portrayed on television shows like Dragon's Den. It doesn't rely on largely irrelevant stories of overvalued tech startups, nor does it build on the largely mistaken narrative of a linear path from cold start to great success that is the essence of business planning, as taught in universities. This is the guide to starting and running a business that will actually work for the rest of us.Burn the Business Plan is for regular people who just want practical, real-world advice on how to start and run a successful business. It shows you how to avoid the common mistakes and what you need to do to put your enterprise on track for success.

Thinking Out Loud

Rio Ferdinand
Authors:
Rio Ferdinand

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER'Tender, heartbreaking ... An extraordinary and unforgettable book. *****' HEAT'When Rebecca died, the idea that one day I might begin to feel better would have struck me as laughable ... I know how persuasive this kind of permanence thinking can be. I know too that anyone locked in its grip will laugh if I promise them that their pain will one day ease. It will. Of course it will. But I know better than to expect anyone to believe me.'In 2015, former England football star Rio Ferdinand suddenly and tragically lost his wife and soulmate Rebecca, aged 34, to cancer. It was a profound shock and Rio found himself struggling to cope not just with the pain of his grief, but also with his new role as both mum and dad to their three young children. Rio's BBC1 documentary, Being Mum and Dad, touched everyone who watched it and won huge praise for the honesty and bravery he showed in talking about his emotions and experiences. His book now shares the story of meeting, marrying and losing Rebecca, his own and the family's grief - as well as the advice and support that get him through each day as they strive to piece themselves back together. Thinking Out Loud is written in the hope that he can inspire others struggling with loss and grief to find the help they need through this most difficult of times.

Leadership Material

Diana Jones
Authors:
Diana Jones

Viewing them as 'touchy feely', intangible and invisible, most leaders separate their personal lives from their professional lives. Diana Jones, an executive coach for 30-years, argues that this is unwise. In fact, the 'soft side' of leadership - empathy, compassion, and authentic communication derived from personal experience - is both powerful and essential to enhancing executive presence, influencing others and achieving results. Through compelling stories and examples taken directly from Jones's coaching sessions with experienced leaders, readers will learn how to make enduring behavioural changes that will produce better business results and create alignment among disparate groups using empathy and leadership language.
