Light Your Life

The Art of using Light for Health and Happiness

By Karl Ryberg

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

Discover how quality light can enhance your life for optimum health and well-being and help you truly thrive.

Learn how to use light to boost your mood and wellbeing, create a happier, healthier home and enhance your life.

The light that surrounds on a daily basis us has a huge impact on our brains, our mood and our mental health and yet, on the whole, we tend to pay it very little attention. Many of us wake up in the dark, turn on the lights, go to work and sit in front of a computer screen for hours on end, passing our days oblivious to the poor-quality lighting that surrounds us. We complain of headaches, of low mood, of poor vision and of getting the blues, or SAD, in the winter, but rarely do we truly consider the effect that light may be having on our lives.

In this brilliant, accessible book Karl Ryberg explains how light affects our eyes, our health and our wellbeing and inspires us to bring more quality light into our daily life. He gives us the scientific information we need to understand the subject, combined with practical advice on maximising our exposure to natural light, selecting the best lighting to use at home, along with advice on minimising the effects of light pollution and blue light from screens and smartphones, working with - not against - our body clocks (including light rituals for better sleep) and gives advice on the use of light therapy and practising eye yoga to encourage your eye muscles to work effectively.

'This is timely advice.' - The Daily Telegraph

Biographical Notes

Karl grew up in Denmark and Sweden, his relative Dr Ryberg Finsen received the first Nobel Prize in Denmark. He has degrees in architecture and psychology with a special interest in photobiology. His recent work takes light out of the clinic to give health and happiness to ordinary people.

Anxiety is Your Superpower

Wendy Suzuki
Authors:
Wendy Suzuki

We live in an age of anxiety. Like an omnipresent yet invisible odour you've grown used to, anxiety has become a constant condition, a fact of life, and a distraction that undermines our quality of life. Dr Wendy Suzuki's ground-breaking research will show us that science tells us a very different story: yes, anxiety is unpleasant - it's meant to be - and in the debilitating extreme, what Wendy will call 'bad anxiety', it's destructive. But most of the anxiety that humans feel is essential - not only to survival, but for higher brain functions formerly thought to be put on hold during anxious moments, Wendy will provide two broad categories of neuroscience-based hacks for harnessing anxiety and facing it head-on. The first will help address and calm anxiety so that you can enjoy the productivity you will experience, and the second grouping of brain science hacks will enable readers to channel anxious feelings into six uses for good anxiety - from productivity, increased emotional intelligence and focus to creativity and confidence. Through Wendy's unique perspective as a neuroscientist, she will teach us how to flip anxiety on its head and offer a counterintuitive lens through which to understand how anxiety manifests in our everyday lives. The book will introduce a taboo breaking slant on anxiety: we will learn how it can be good for us and that once we learn how to play it at its own game, it can become our superpower!

People power works and is changing the world around us. This is a user's guide to activism by one of the UK's biggest names in grass-roots campaigning. Illustrated with lessons from the real world, it is a guide to creating change for anyone who has ever asked themselves 'why hasn't anyone done something about that?'We are taught to believe that only a small group of people in society have the ability to change laws and company policies. That's simply not true any longer - each of is capable of using our experiences to change the world. We just need to use that thing that makes us different, and learn how to channel it. Having worked as a campaigner for the last 11 years, Kajal Odedra of change.org - which is used by 15 million people in the UK - has learned the tricks of the trade that have traditionally been held in circles of power, and believes that everyone should know how to speak up and be heard. Her mission is to show people how to use their voice to make their community, politicians and CEOs take notice.

A Cure for Heartache

Mary Jane Grant
Authors:
Mary Jane Grant

'A tale of loss and hope, of strength drawn from truly inhabiting the moment.' - Raynor Winn, author of The Salt PathHeartwarming non fiction up lit about starting over and embracing life, one simple moment at a time. When her husband of twenty five years suddenly announces he's leaving her, writer Mary Jane Grant runs away to London to immerse herself in any reality but her own. Reeling from the shock and loss of her marriage and the life she's known, she begins to discover that if she can just focus on the moment she's in, take notice of the people, the sights and smells around her, that her pain and grief start to recede. From the bustling cafes of Camden and the pastel-coloured streets of Notting Hill, to the sun soaked vineyards of the south of France, her journey leads her to rich new experiences that she could never have imagined in her old life. Real connections are made, she lets go of the things she no longer needs, and takes pleasure in the good, generous and beautiful parts of life that she encounters every day. Beautifully and succinctly told, this is a story about what happens when you embrace life, whatever it may bring, with surprising - and joyful - results. While the tea steeped, I split open the muffin and slathered butter across the warm, crumbly surface. I watched the butter melt. I took a bite. Memories of my grandmother's kitchen came back. I cradled the smooth white cup in my hand, ran my fingers over the uneven top of the time-worn wooden table. I looked around the place and watched people. Time passed. I realised that it was an hour since I first saw the sign telling me to smell the tea. And, all this time I had been possessed of neither sad memories nor anxious worries. I was completely and simply here, with the tea, the place, the people, myself. I was present. And it felt wonderful.(P) 2019 Hodder & Stoughton Limited

Walk With Your Wolf

Jonathan Hoban
Authors:
Jonathan Hoban

'An important message about the power of reconnecting with the primal self to achieve balance in the modern world. A fascinating read' - Megan HineNature is our greatest healer. It's time to start walking and reclaim the wildness in all of us.When did you last take a walk? Not a stroll to the shops, or to the pub, but a walk that got you energised, stimulated your senses, allowing you to de-stress? If the answer is that you'd love to walk, but don't have the time, there really are more reasons to get outside than you might think. When we walk we find the space to process our feelings and we begin to have the courage to be vulnerable and honest with ourselves. Walking awakens the intuition that helps us face up to our difficulties and walk alongside them, enabling us to find positive solutions to our problems. Our ancestors knew all about movement - they walked across the planet, understanding nature and learning to respect and work in harmony with it. Written by a London-based therapist, Walk with your Wolf is part memoir, part self-help and part reflection on the connection we must re-establish with our natural, intuitive selves if we are to live healthy, fulfilling lives. Offering practical advice and exercises on how to walk and think as a method of confronting difficult emotions, this book will allow you to reconnect with your intuition, confidence and power.'Deftly blending science, his own narrative and his experience as a therapist, he is at our side as we find a way of engaging with and being healed by nature. Like the wolf in the book's title, we can reconnect with our own elemental lupine instincts which are so often repressed in our stressful and artificial world - both a wolf's wildness as well as its sociability and need to be part of a pack. Follow in Hoban's easy to apply footsteps and you will never walk alone again. - Rachel Kelly, bestselling author of Walking on Sunshine and The Happy Kitchen

Cheer Up Love, Susan's first book, had a clear aim: to help people understand depression. Sunny Side Up has a similarly clear path: to persuade people to be kinder to each other and spread more joy. These are extremely difficult and confusing times - people are cross and shouty. It's exhausting! But more than anything, people like Susan, people who don't hate other people, are apologising for the way that they think. Susan wants to make sure that they don't. She wants them to know that it's ok to love people and that kindness is something wonderful and brilliant. Above all, she wants them to bring on the joy. So the mission is simple. To get the nation to join her in not being negative. To bring back joy, kindness and community, to find that joy in the little things in life and defeat the hate and fear. Susan is a one-woman army of hope and joy, and she's ready to lead the nation in a different direction.
