The first thing I wanted to do when I finished Violet Made of Thorns was read it again. The second thing I wanted to do was write down all the moments that made me laugh, shiver, cry, fling the book across the room only to retrieve it five seconds later and apologize because I just can't put it down. A good few recent novels explore the relationships between current fantasy literature and the traditional tales among the foundations of the genre. This is one of the most thoughtful and thought-provoking that I have come across. Quite apart from that, it's a skilfully written and entertaining second world fantasy novel in its own right. Highly recommended, and I look forward to reading whatever Gina Chen writes next
