THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER | NIGEL - One of Britain's favourite dogs! 'CHARMING, AFFECTING AND OFTEN BEAUTIFUL' India KnightWhen Monty Don's golden retriever Nigel became the surprise star of BBC Gardeners' World inspiring huge interest, fan mail and his own social media accounts, Monty Don wanted to explore what makes us connect with animals quite so deeply. In many respects Nigel is a very ordinary dog; charming, handsome and obedient, as so many are. He is also a much loved family pet. He is also a star. By telling Nigel's story, Monty relates his relationships with the other special dogs in his life in a memoir of his dogs past and very much present. Witty, touching and life-affirming, Nigel: My family and other dogs is wonderfully heart-warming. Monty Don is a great writer coming out of the garden and into the hearts and homes of every dog lover in the UK.'I have always had a dog, or dogs. I cannot imagine life without them. I am just as much a fan of Nigel as any besotted viewer. In the book I explore why we love dogs and what they mean to us emotionally and domestically. I look back on all the dogs in my life - all of which I have loved deeply and which have been an essential part of my life. So, this is the book of Nigel - but also the book of all our dogs in every British family and a celebration of the deep love we feel for them' Monty Don

The Jewel Garden

Authors:
Monty Don, Sarah Don, Monty Don & Sarah Don

'TRULY INSPIRING' Mail on SundayNow familiar to millions of Gardeners' World fans as Longmeadow (the home of Nigel & Nellie), this is the story of Monty & Sarah Don's early days there. THE JEWEL GARDEN is the story of the garden that bloomed from the muddy fields around the Dons' Tudor farmhouse, a perfect metaphor for the Monty and Sarah's own rise from the ashes of a spectacular commercial failure in the late '80s .At the same time THE JEWEL GARDEN is the story of a creative partnership that has weathered the greatest storm, and a testament to the healing powers of the soil. Monty Don has always been candid about the garden's role in helping him to pull back from the abyss of depression; THE JEWEL GARDEN elaborates on this much further. Written in an optimistic, autobiographical vein, Monty and Sarah's story is truly an exploration of what it means to be a gardener.

Monty Don
Authors:
Monty Don

Monty Don, the face of British gardening, has written a weekly Observer column on his garden for the past ten years. Over time the columns have been a practical guide, a poetic record of the garden's changing seasons, and also a personal account of how the garden has kept his feet firmly planted on the ground through bad times and good. This is a collection of fifty of Monty's best columns, that will delight his readers and gardeners everywhere. 'Growing vegetables, herbs and fruit should be done in the same spirit as choosing your music or clothes: with a mix of precision and adventure.''Gardens are complex and messy and, as in life, there are few easy fixes.' 'One swallow may not make a summer but it damn sure made my day.' 'Planting trees is deeply satisfying and good for the soul, especially on a winter's day. What else can a human do that leans so far into the future.'

Vietnam Today

Mark A. Ashwill
Authors:
Mark A. Ashwill

Vietnam stands at a crossroads. Located in the geographical center of Southeast Asia, Vietnam is a complex mixture of the ancient and the modern. A Soviet-style legacy contrasts with an emerging Western-style market economy. Vietnam is faced with pressing political, social and economic challenges, and yet it is full of hope and potential. Here is a first look at Vietnam in the twenty-first century, a nation undergoing rapid change and opening up to the world. Dr. Mark Ashwill paints a broad picture of Vietnam, past and present, and explores today's defining issues. Readers come to understand how a two-thousand-year history of foreign invasion, occupation and war has deeply influenced the Vietnamese character. The Chinese, French and U.S. Americans have all left their imprint. Yet the struggle against oppression has infused the Vietnamese with a fierce spirit of nationalism and caution in their dealings with foreigners. Building relationships and trust as a prelude to doing business are critical to the Vietnamese, whether at home or abroad. Vietnam Today reveals the most prominent characteristics of the Vietnamese: their energy and drive, the dominance of group over individual and the paramount importance of maintaining harmony. In doing so, Ashwill and his Vietnamese contributor shed light on many sources of misunderstanding between Vietnamese and Western professionals. But for those who are prepared to take the time to get to know the people, to move at their pace, and to learn about their culture and history, Vietnam can be a land of promise and opportunity.

Experiential Activities for Intercultural Learning

H. Ned Seelye
Authors:
H. Ned Seelye

The need for new approaches, methods, and techniques in cross-cultural training and intercultural education are virtually insatiable, especially for experiential activities. The emphasis in this book is on activities that foster the development of intercultural awareness and cross-cultural sensitivity, helping learners understand some of the principal dimensions of intercultural communication, cross-cultural human relations, and cultural diversity. The selections include simulations, case studies, role plays, critical incidents, and individual and group exercises. A number address relatively complex workplace issues; others focus on intercultural dynamics in educational contexts. Some are printed here for the first time; others are culled from less accessible sources. They range from basic introductory activities to those that facilitate the exploration of intercultural issues in significant depth. In an introductory essay, Sheila Ramsey, an experienced scholar and trainer, examines the nature of intercultural training and lays out a conceptual framework for assessing its effectiveness. The rest of the book is made up of activities organized around six facets of intercultural contact: cultural differences for beginners, understanding oneself as a cultural person, the intercultural perspective, working across cultures, cross-cultural "foul-ups," and returning home. Each section opens with an introduction, followed by activities. Each activity includes, at a minimum, objectives, audience, materials required, setting, time required, and procedure for facilitation. Many of the activities include handouts or illustrations. This book will be especially valuable for trainers and educators who want to further ground their work in a solid theoretical base and at he same time augment their resources to expand heir repertoire.

Intercultural Sourcebook Vol 1

Monica Mumford, Sandie Fowler
Authors:
Monica Mumford, Sandie Fowler

Nothing could be more timely than the publication of this revised edition of the Intercultural Sourcebook. The 1979 edition reflected the new field of cross-cultural training, at that time searching for focus and direction. This new edition embodies the progress made in that search, systematically defining the field's parameters and offering concrete examples of the methods and techniques currently employed by its practitioners. Intercultural Sourcebook will be a "must have" not only for educators and trainers concerned with intercultural learning or the development of cross-cultural skills, but for anyone who wishes to comprehend fully what these processes involve. Comprehensive in scope, the book examines both the principal methods used in cross-cultural training and a selection of specialized techniques and instructional devices. In this, the first of a two-volume set, six methods are examined in twenty articles: role plays, contrast-culture training, simulation games, critical incidents, the cultural assimilator, and case studies. In each, a lead article traces the development and use of the particular method; several articles then offer specific applications. Intercultural Sourcebook provides both a framework for conceptualizing the training methods covered and resources for applying them in one's own work. Each article is written by an experienced trainer; in fact, the author list comprises the core of a who's who in the field. Thorough, practical, and enlightening, this book will define the field for years to come.
