Out of This World

How NASA created the best team on the planet

By Paul Sean Hill

  • Paperback
  • £10.99

FInd out how NASA creates and leads stellar teams and how you can bring Mission Control leadership to your organization.

Failure is always an option...

For more than 50 years, NASA's Mission Control has been known for two things: perfect decision making in extreme situations and producing generations of steely-eyed missile men and women who continue that tradition. A key to that legacy of brilliant performance is a particular brand of leadership, especially at the working level in Mission Control.

Take the ultimate insiders look at the leadership values and culture that created the best team on this planet. Paul Sean Hill was responsible for NASA's Mission Operations support for manned space flight from 2007-2011. In this candid book he shows that the secret to Mission Control's success has never been rocket science and that the real practice of perfect decision making can be applied to any organisation or team. By demonstrating how his Mission Control team nurtured a culture which has delivered impossible wins for decades, Hill provides a guide for all leaders to boost their company's performance at all levels.

Whether failure means cost and schedule overruns, quality reduction, loss of market share, bankruptcy - or putting someone's life a risk, how we lead can determine whether even small mistakes are dealt with or are left to snowball out of control and destroy an enterprise. Discover how to take leadership from the Mission Control Room to your boardroom and beyond, and achieve this out-of-this-world leadership environment in your team.

'When people gave up on Wylie, Wylie refused to give up on people.'For a street dog born in the city of Kandahar, Afghanistan, to be crowned top dog at Scruffts, a competition for crossbreeds held during Crufts, the largest dog show on earth, is nothing short of a miracle. But for Wylie, the gentle, cropped eared ball of fur, miracles seemed to happen quite regularly. Beaten and abused while being used as a bait dog, Wylie suffered terrible injuries that needed urgent treatment. Rescued close to death, with hacked off ears and a severed tail, he was attended to by soldiers who feared he would not last the night. Astonishingly he did, only to return days later with new injuries. However a lifeline came when he was handed over to animal welfare Charity Nowzad and flown to Britain in the hope of finding a new life. But would anyone take a chance on a seemingly nervous and undomesticated stray? Luckily for Wylie his biggest adventure yet was about to begin...This is the incredible and heart-warming story, full of tragedy and triumph, of a dog who never gave up hope.

The Price of Fish

Ian Harris, Michael Mainelli
Authors:
Ian Harris, Michael Mainelli

In The Price of Fish, Michael Mainelli and Ian Harris examine in a unique way the world s most abiding and wicked problems sustainability, global warming, over-fishing, overpopulation, the pensions crisis; all of which are characterized by a set of messy, circular, aggressive and peculiarly long-term problems and go on to suggest that it is not the circumstances that are too complex, but our way of reading them that is too simple. Too simple and often wrong. The authors aim to blend four streams choice, economics, systems and evolution in a combination they believe is the key to making better decisions and, in turn, finding answers to the world's most pernicious problems.

A Beginner's Guide to the Deep Culture Experience

Joseph Shaules
Authors:
Joseph Shaules

When we leave and travel abroad, for pleasure or for business, we make a choice: to have a superficial "airport experience" at our destination, or to appreciate the hidden culture beneath the surface. A Beginner's Guide to the Deep Culture Experience proposes a deep culture journey, encouraging travelers to pursue a meaningful cross-cultural experience. Sharing anthropologist Edward Hall's conviction that becoming aware of our unconscious cultural programming is a transcendental challenge facing us all, author Joseph Shaules shows how the "deep culture experience" can teach us about ourselves. This practical book is an accessible introduction to intercultural communication without buzz words, theory or abstraction. If you travel internationally for work or simply enjoy the diverse cultures of the world, read this inspirational book before your next trip.
