Angels

By Peter Stanford

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

A thought-provoking and entertaining twenty-first century look at what was once referred to as 'angelology', which searches out the origins of angels in religious thought, history, psychology and wider culture, and asks why, in an age of disbelief, they remain more compelling and comforting for many than God.

'In a 2016 poll, one in 10 Britons claimed to have experienced the presence of an angel, while one in three remain convinced that they have a guardian angel. These are huge numbers and mean that, on some counts, angels are doing better than God.'

In the secular, sceptical, scientific post-Christian world of the West, these statistics reveal that many of us still believe in angels. The same survey even reports that one in six atheists may rule out God but accept angels. But what are angels, and what is their basis, their history and their continuing role in the great faiths, and beyond their walls? Are they a symbol of God's concern, nothing more than a metaphor, part of the poetry of religion, created to illuminate a deeper truth about human existence and the universe? Or are they something more challenging - real, if not quite flesh and blood?

In Angels, his latest investigation into the history, theology and cultural significance of religious ideas, author, broadcaster and biographer Peter Stanford texplores these questions in an often very personal journey into the history and current cult of these familiar heavenly creatures. 'I grew up with guardian angels,' he begins. 'Mostly they inhabited the sleep-inducing cadences of my night-time prayers, repeated from under a candlewick bedspread in my Catholic home near Liverpool, while gazing up at the "holy picture" of Jesus on the wall with his copiously bleeding heart. "Angel of God, My guardian dear, To whom his love commits me here, Ever this day be at my side, To light and guard, To rule and guide. Amen". Today, if I was approached today by a pollster and asked if I believed in guardian angels, what would I say? Probably something mealy-mouthed such as, "what do you mean by believe?" Because this is inexact territory and an invisible world.'

'There is no better navigator through the space in which art, culture and spirituality meet than Peter Stanford.' - Cole Moreton, The Independent on Sunday

'Peter Stanford has a gift for taking theological complexity and running with it. An excellent story-teller with a grasp of the oddities of human judgement.' - Piers Plowright, Camden New Journal

Ways to Go Beyond and Why They Work

Rupert Sheldrake
Authors:
Rupert Sheldrake

Rupert Sheldrake is admired by both scientists and believers, both mainstream Christians but also in New Age and alternative circles. His famous theory of morphic resonance arose from an observation that once one blue tit discovered that it could peck through the silver foil on milk bottles to get the cream, blue tits all around the world began to do this in a remarkably short time - faster than if blue tits were able to talk and pass the message on.Sheldrake's theory is that consciousness is not local to human and animal brains but that we all tune into a cosmic consciousness. In this book he applies these theories to:· Prayer · Psychedelics · Fasting · Making good habits habitual · Sports · Music · Dancing

Walking to Jerusalem

Justin Butcher
Authors:
Justin Butcher

2017 marked three important anniversaries for the Palestinian people: 100 years since the Balfour Declaration; 50 years since the Six-day War; and ten years since the Blockade of Gaza. As an act of penance, solidarity and hope, actor and musician Justin Butcher - along with ten other companions for the full route, plus another hundred joining him for various stretches along the way - walked from London to Jerusalem. This book is the record of his journey: a combination of walking journal, travel writing and pilgrim stories. It's less of a travel guide to walking across Europe and more an exploration of the many strands radiating from the Holy Land and its narrative, weaving paths across place and history, through the lives of Justin's fellow-walkers - and, of course, his own life. Between the route itinerary and the themes of Balfour and Christian Zionism, Weizmann and cordite, colonialism, Jerusalem Syndrome and Desert spirituality, Justin charts a chronicle of serendipity: happenstances hilarious, infuriating and occasionally numinous - or, as pilgrims might say, encounters with the Divine.

The Prodigal Prophet

Timothy Keller
Authors:
Timothy Keller

Most people, even those who are nonreligious, are familiar with the book of Jonah: a rebellious prophet defies God and is swallowed by a whale. Less familiar to most people is the second half of this Biblical story--what happens after Jonah is released from the belly of the fish. Yet it is in this second half of the story that one of the most powerful and important lessons of the Bible is hidden. The famous story shows how, if we would understand the mercy of God, it will always take us in directions we would rather not go, toward people we would rather not care about, and ultimately into the deepest counsels of God. In a time of growing division, The Prodigal Prophet shows us God's love among people, and how Christians must listen to God's call even when it takes them to uncomfortable places.

Eternity is Now in Session

John Ortberg
Authors:
John Ortberg

Something in us is waiting - for what, we don't know. Something different? Something better? For Christians, perhaps the deepest expression of what we're waiting for is found in the phrase 'eternal life'. But what is eternal life? Why do we want it? And how do we know if we have it? In Eternity Is Now in Session, bestselling author John Ortberg dispels the myth that eternal life is something way out in outer space that we can only hope to experience after we die - and that being saved is merely about meeting the minimal entrance requirements for getting into heaven. Instead, John unpacks the reality that the moment we trust Christ, we are initiated into 'eternal living' with God as a here and now reality, one that will continue beyond our life on this earth. Jesus defined eternal life just once, in John 17:3: " ... that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." The kind of 'knowing God' that is eternal life is an interactive relationship, not just an affirmation of certain facts about God. Once we begin the transformative journey of truly knowing God, we can start to experience his presence, favour, and resurrection power right here on this earth - in the details, tasks, and challenges of daily, ordinary life. And as we begin to know God this way, we'll realise each moment of our lives is a vehicle to the eternity we've been longing for all along.

Prayers from the Heart

Lorna Byrne
Authors:
Lorna Byrne

Lorna Byrne has helped millions of people around the world by calling on them to realise that they each have a guardian angel and by showing them that can ask for help from God and the angels.Lorna is often asked for help on how to ask and how to pray, so in this new book she gives detailed advice and also includes prayers for different occasions. She says: 'Sometimes our prayers are so focussed on asking for things, we forget to listen out for what God, the angels and our love ones are trying to tell us. God always has this abundance of blessings prepared for us, small blessings and great blessings. He wants to give every individual great life-changing blessings, beginning when that individual is born. God will do everything to make it happen, but He will never infringe on an individual's free will, which a good reason for us to engage intelligent conversation with him - listening as well as asking - in prayer.'
