Superteams

The Secrets of Great Teamwork

By Matthew Syed

  • Hardback
  • £20.00

This is a book about how teams win. How teams go from ordinary to extraordinary.

Great teams rarely happen by accident; they happen by design. And that design is rooted in the motivational and strategic bonds that tie them together. But what makes true cohesion? How do you create the right combination of skills in team members? Does information flow between them in a fluent way? Are their actions harmoniously coordinated?

In a journey to understand 'Superteams', this book takes us into the killing fields of Iraq after the 2003 invasion, the flourishing of knowledge in Renaissance Italy, the Death Zone at the summit of Mount Everest, a nuclear submarine patrolling the world's oceans, a rugby team dressed all in black, the high-tech industries of Silicon Valley, and in to the Manchester United dressing room during the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson. Drawing from the latest research in psychology, systems theory, economics, and neuroscience, Matthew Syed, the No.1 bestselling author of Black Box Thinking, shows how environments can be consciously engineered for teams to gel. And how, in high performing teams, the knowledge, ideas and information used by different individuals can yield successes far beyond the strategic skill or performance of any single member.

In our increasingly complex world we all need to learn how to maximize our collective potential - across industry, the military, technology, business, politics, sport and academia - and turn our teams in to "Superteams".

Cracking Complexity

David Komlos, David Benjamin
Authors:
David Komlos, David Benjamin

The revolutionary process at the heart of Cracking Complexity is backed by empirical research from the authors' work with world-leading companies whose experiences will serve as case-studies. Komlos and Benjamin's approach harnesses disparate views from inside and outside of an organization, including front-line employees, former competitors, theorists and disruptors around a big, messy problem to form a high-functioning team of people, a "mega-brain," that can see every side of a problem and identify the best solution (s) for it. Complex issues are solved in a matter of days, not months, not years, a time-frame supported by the authors' research and practice over three decades.

Factfulness

Authors:
Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling, Anna Rosling Rönnlund

'One of the most important books I've ever read - an indispensable guide to thinking clearly about the world.' BILL GATES'Hans Rosling tells the story of "the secret silent miracle of human progress" as only he can. But Factfulness does much more than that. It also explains why progress is so often secret and silent and teaches readers how to see it clearly.' MELINDA GATESFactfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts. When asked simple questions about global trends - why the world's population is increasing; how many young women go to school; how many of us live in poverty - we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers. In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and a man who can make data sing, Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens, and reveals the ten instincts that distort our perspective. It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most. Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world.

The Club

Jonathan Clegg, Joshua Robinson
Authors:
Jonathan Clegg, Joshua Robinson

This is a sports and business tale of how money, ambition, and 25 years of uncommon drama re-made an ancient institution into a 21st century entertainment empire. No-one knew it when their experiment began, but with luck, brazen confidence and good timing, a motley cast of billionaires, chancers and chairmen struck Premier League gold.Soon, everyone was attracted to the gold rush, from Russian oligarchs, to Emirati sheikhs, American tycoons and Asian Tiger titans. Some succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Some lost everything. But the cash they flowed into English soccer lured players, agents and managers from around the world, turning ageing industrial cities and a selection of fortunate clubs into the focus of a compulsive global attention.Today, as players are sold for hundreds of millions, clubs are valued in the billions, and games are beamed out to nearly 200 countries, all while the league struggles to preserve its 'English' identity and traditions.Deeply researched and drawing on dozens of exclusive interviews with the key power-brokers at every major team - from the aristocrats of Manchester United and Arsenal, to the new money of Chelsea and Manchester City - The Club is the definitive and wildly entertaining narrative of how the Premier League product took over the world.

After the thrill of promotion to an executive position comes the sobering reality of just how difficult it is to succeed at this level - and how hard it can be to find help. Some 40 percent of new executives don't last 18 months. A failed senior-level hire can cost a company up to $2.7 million. Why do so many employees with strong track records derail when promoted to the executive suite? In this 12th Anniversary Edition of the classic insider's guide to executive career progression, Scott Eblin draws on decades of experience as a leader and executive coach to identify why new executives fail and offers a practical program for achieving success. Beyond tactical advice, Eblin provides a framework for transformational behavior and thinking - for creating executive presence, the confidence that is critical for success. Essential for leaders who have just been promoted to or are on track for the executive level, as well as any executive who needs a refresher.

Going to the Match

Duncan Hamilton
Authors:
Duncan Hamilton

Why does football matter so much? Why is the mood of those who support it tethered to the performance or the results of their team? Why do people, otherwise intelligent and rational, become compulsively passionate about it? And why, more than ever before, do we identify the success of cities - as they identify themselves - through their football club? Over the course of a year, Duncan will unpack the reasons why football is always more than just a game, and far from nostalgia this is a modern book for the modern reader. The landscape has changed so much, and football fans have never had it so good. Part memoir, part polemic, Duncan will explore why the mood of those who support football are tethered to the performance of their team, intercut with judicious slices of memoir and reminiscences about the players managers of his past, including everyone from Ramsey to Stein, Paisley to Daglish; Lineker to Shilton, Gullitt to Maradona and Cryuff and Gascoigne, Clough.
