Black Sheep and Prodigals

An Antidote to Black and White Religion

By Dave Tomlinson

  • Paperback
  • £9.99

A guide to faith for doubters, sceptics and baffled believers - from the bestselling author of How to be a bad Christian

'Very interesting, it's all about not alienating people before they even think about crossing the threshold of where you worship.' Chris Evans, BBC Radio 2

Do you feel more at home on the edges of faith than at the centre? Would you call yourself a bit of a black sheep?

Too often Christian spirituality has been associated with conformity, or a subculture where people don't feel able to ask questions. But Dave Tomlinson, author of How to be a bad Christian, doesn't think it has to be like this; instead, our spiritual communities can be 'laboratories of the Spirit' - places where we can explore issues of faith and spirit with openness, imagination and creativity.

Welcome to black sheep spirituality - where doubts and questions are an essential part of faith; where difference of opinion is a sign of a secure community; where divine revelation is embraced wherever it is found - in the arts, science and the natural world as well as religious tradition; and where faith is something that is lived and practised rather than embalmed in beliefs or ritual.

'Theology for anyone and everyone' BBC Radio 2

Biographical Notes

Dave Tomlinson was a house church leader for many years and is now an Anglican priest. Unable to accept the narrow restrictions of his tradition, he founded the legendary Holy Joe's, a church in a pub in Clapham for disaffected church drop-outs. He is now Vicar of St Luke's, Holloway, a thriving parish church in north London. He is the author of the seminal The Post-Evangelical, I Shall Not Want and Re-enchanting Christianity, and most recently How to Be a Bad Christian and The Bad Christian's Manifesto.

Science and Spiritual Practices

Rupert Sheldrake
Authors:
Rupert Sheldrake

In this pioneering book Rupert Sheldrake shows how science helps validate seven practices on which all religions are built, and which are part of our common human heritage:· Meditation· Gratitude· Connecting with nature· Relating to plants· Rituals· Singing and chanting· Pilgrimage and holy places. The effects of spiritual practices are now being investigated scientifically as never before, and many studies have shown that religious and spiritual practices generally make people happier and healthier. Rupert Sheldrake summarizes the latest scientific research on what happens when we take part in these practices, and suggests ways that readers can explore these fields for themselves. For those who are religious, Science and Spiritual Practices will illuminate the evolutionary origins of their own traditions and give a new appreciation of their power. For the non-religious, this book will show how the core practices of spirituality are accessible to all, even if they do not subscribe to a religious belief system. This is a book for anyone who suspects that in the drive towards radical secularism, something valuable has been left behind. Rupert Sheldrake believes that by opening ourselves to the spiritual dimension we may find the strength to live more wholesome and fulfilling lives.

Streams of Living Water

Richard Foster
Authors:
Richard Foster

In this landmark work, Richard Foster examines the 'streams of living water' - the six dimensions of faith and practice - that have defined Christian tradition around the world and down the centuries. In this inspiring book he looks at: - the Contemplative tradition - or the prayer-filled life- the Holiness tradition - or the virtuous life- the Charismatic tradition - or the Spirit-empowered life- the Social Justice tradition - or the compassionate life- the Evangelical tradition - or the word-centred life- the Incarnational tradition - or the sacramental lifeFoster's celebration of the spiritual life incorporates history's most significant Christian figures and movements and argues for a rich, well-rounded faith, free of constricting labels.

Every Job a Parable

John Van Sloten
Authors:
John Van Sloten

'I have a hunch that thousands of people are waiting for this book, as they struggle to translate God into the language of the cultures that constitute most of their waking lives. John Van Sloten shatters the sacred-secular divide, repositioning work as worship, and glory in the normality of the mundane. This is a message that really could revolutionise your relationship with God, but be warned that it will do so very quietly.' Pete GreigA farmer, a nurse and an astronaut walk into a church...They each bring with them their own exhaustions and exasperations, their own uncertainty about whether and how their work matters to God. Good news: all work matters to God, because all work reflects some aspect of the character of God. God created the world so that it runs best when it mirrors him, and we ourselves find the most fulfilment when we recognize God behind our labour.John Van Sloten offers a fascinating and innovative reflection on vocation: our work is a parable of God; as we work, we are icons of grace.

Home

Jo Swinney
Authors:
Jo Swinney

Where is Home? This question troubles many of us. We may live far from where we grew up, away from those we love or in a culture not our own. But we all need somewhere to belong, to find a sense of home in this world.Jo Swinney was born in the UK, but grew up in Portugal and France. She went to an English boarding school, did a gap year in southern Africa and in her twenties studied theology in Canada, where she met her American husband. Now back in the UK, she's had more reason than most to wonder what 'home' really means. Is home where you come from - where you live now - where the people you love are - or what?Interweaving a frank and poignant retelling of her own story with theological and psychological insights, Jo's original and authentic exploration of home in all its many and varied forms is a heartfelt call to find our home in the things that are truly of most value.
