John Murray Press is a division of Hachette UK. It was founded in January 2013 and has grown rapidly since then. What you will be doing

Maternity cover for the JMP Sales Director, you will be reporting directly to the Hachette Group Sales Director and responsible for maximising the sales opportunities for JMP, ensuring budgeted sales and profit targets are met and exceeded.

You will be responsible for leading the sales team to deliver optimum sales across the UK and International markets, including from our US-based office in Boston, exceeding given budgets/targets by title, by customer, by list, across frontlist and backlist.  This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to work on a diverse portfolio of lists across both trade and specialist imprints.

This is a senior sales role so you will need to have experience working across UK trade sales in publishing and good managerial skills.

What we are looking for

We’re looking for a strong team player who is commercially astute and aware with experience working in UK trade publishing sales.

We are looking for a candidate with direct experience of managing top High Street accounts, particularly Waterstones. It is essential that the candidate has strong relationships at Head Office and branch level and can participate in Group strategy for this account.
You’ll need to have excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, an ability to multi-task and an enthusiasm for working in a fast-moving commercial environment.

The key tasks of the role will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage and motivate the John Murray Press Sales Team (3 reports)
  • Work closely with the Group Sales teams, Hodder Sales Director and Hodder Sales team, ensuring JMP titles are well-represented in all appropriate accounts
  • Overall responsibility for the sales budget with regular forecasting, ensuring that the sales team are aware of targets, both in terms of sales and profit
  • Monitor and deliver the US budget through management of a US-based Sales Manager, ensuring Nicholas Brearley / JML / Sheldon Press titles are well-represented at all HBG Sales Conferences
  • Constant review of the department, both process and people
  • Work closely with the MD and Board to feed into and help shape the strategy of the division
  • To work closely with colleagues in Editorial, Marketing and Publicity teams as well as the Inventory and Commercial teams to ensure that all aspects of publishing are aligned
  • Manage customer spend to ensure we deliver maximum sales at minimum cost
  • Monitor monthly sales figures and P&L

Excellent Microsoft Office skills (especially Excel and PowerPoint) and data analysis skills are essential.
