Help Your Child Deal With Stress – and Thrive

Stuart Shanker
Authors:
Stuart Shanker

We are seeing a generation of children and teens with excessively high levels of stress, and, as a result, an explosion of health problems in young people today. But few parents recognise the 'hidden stressors' that their children are struggling with. This book, previously published as Self-Reg, will give you the tools to help you recognise stress and understand your child's behaviour, and teach your stressed, emotional child to identify their 'big' emotions and get back on an even keel by themselves. Stress can affect your child in many ways - whether it's exam pressure, pressure exerted by friends online or in the playground, or related to health, with lack of sleep and anxiety at home contributing. Help Your Child Deal With Stress - and Thrive is a ground-breaking parenting book, in which Dr Stuart Shanker argues that by teaching children the art of self-regulation, it can transform their behaviour and help them to identify, talk about and manage their emotions. This leads to a harmonious home, and children who feel nurtured and supported.Mastering the art of self-regulation can help children learn to deal with experiences, overcome frustration, pay better attention, engage better with others and enhance their learning capabilities. In turn, children will develop the confidence, along with the skills and emotional strength needed to navigate the pressures and stresses of the modern world.Underpinned by science, Dr Shanker's techniques have had a remarkable effect on children and parents alike, and hundreds of thousands of children who have gone through the programme in Canada have shown significant improvement in literacy, numeracy and behaviour. 'In this important and timely book, Stuart Shanker encourages us to see our children in a whole new light and gives us the tools we need to help nurture our young in order that they can better manage stress, build resiliency and improve their emotional health. Today's pupils are under serious pressure to perform; by helping children recognize, identify and talk about their emotions, we can help them find balance and ultimately realise their true potential.' - Sir Anthony Seldon, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buckingham, co-founder of Action for Happiness and best-selling author

Blackout

Sarah Hepola
Authors:
Sarah Hepola

A raw, vivid and ultimately uplifting memoir of addiction and recovery from the Salon.com personal essays editor, in the spirit of Drinking: A Love Story and Wild. For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was 'the gasoline of all adventure'. She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. Drinking felt like freedom, part of her birthright as a strong, enlightened twenty-first-century woman. But there was a price. She often blacked out, waking up with a blank space where four hours should be. Mornings became detective work on her own life. What did I say last night? How did I meet that guy? She apologized for things she couldn't remember doing, as though she were cleaning up after an evil twin. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth. The fuel she thought she needed was draining her spirit instead.A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, BLACKOUT is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure-the sober life she never wanted. Shining a light into her blackouts, she discovers the person she buried, as well as the confidence, intimacy, and creativity she once believed came only from a bottle. Her tale will resonate with anyone who has been forced to reinvent themselves or struggled in the face of necessary change. It's about giving up the thing you cherish most-but getting yourself back in return.

'I asked Jai what she has learned since my diagnosis,' Randy Pausch wrote about his wife in THE LAST LECTURE. 'Turns out, she could write a book titled Forget the Last Lecture; Here's the Real Story.' DREAM ON traces Jai's experiences since Randy's diagnosis, from the constant struggle she faced as a mother of three small children, to the burdens and dilemmas that accompany the role of caregiver: navigating the steep medical learning curve; managing finances; often neglecting one's one's needs; making gut-wrenching decisions; and dealing with emotions ranging from guilt and resentment, to our greatest human qualities of compassion and love. With concrete advice woven artfully into a personal narrative, DREAM ON will resonate and appeal not only to the legions of readers who made THE LAST LECTURE a phenomenal bestseller, but also to all those who have lost -- or are in the process of losing -- a loved one.

India: it's a nation of geeks, swots and nerds. Almost one in five of all medical and dental staff in the UK is of Indian origin, and one in six employed scientists with science or engineering doctorates in the US is Asian. By the turn of the millennium, there were even claims that a third of all engineers in Silicon Valley were of Indian origin, with Indians running 750 of its tech companies. At the dawn of this scientific revolution, Geek Nation is a journey to meet the inventors, engineers and young scientists helping to give birth to the world's next scientific superpower - a nation built not on conquest, oil or minerals, but on the scientific ingenuity of its people. Angela Saini explains how ancient science is giving way to new, and how the technology of the wealthy are passing on to the poor. Delving inside the psyche of India's science-hungry citizens, she explores the reason why the government of the most religious country on earth has put its faith in science and technology.Through witty first-hand reportage and penetrative analysis, Geek Nation explains what this means for the rest of the world, and how a spiritual nation squares its soul with hard rationality. Full of curious, colourful characters and gripping stories, it describes India through its people - a nation of geeks.
