English for the Natives

Discover the Grammar You Don't Know You Know

By Harry Ritchie

  • Hardback
  • £14.99

A guide to the grammar you already know.

Discover the grammar you already know.

'My first English lesson was grammar with the terrifying Mrs Petrie. She spent the entire time marching up and down the classroom, thwacking various items of school furniture with a ruler while she banged on about the ING part of the verb. I sat there, vibrating with fear, desperately trying to figure out what on earth she could mean. Irregular Negative Gerund? Intransitive Nominative Genitive? It was only years later, when I was teaching English to foreign students, that I realised that English grammar wasn't obscure and wilfully difficult but a fascinating subject which I was already brilliant at - and this book will prove that you are too.'

Forget the little you think you know about English grammar and start afresh with this highly entertaining and accessible guide. English for the Natives outlines the rules and structures of our language as they are taught to foreign students - and have never before been explained to us. Harry Ritchie also examines the grammar of dialects as well as standard English and shows how non-standard forms are just as valid.

With examples from a wide variety of sources, from Ali G to John Betjeman, Margaret Thatcher to Match of the Day, this essential book reveals some surprising truths about our language and teaches you all the things you didn't know you knew about grammar.

Biographical Notes

Harry Ritchie is a former literary editor of the Sunday Times and is the author of five previous books including Success Stories, an analysis of the English literary scene of the 1950s, and The Last Pink Bits, a tour of Britain's remaining colonies. He was born in Kirkcaldy, was educated at Edinburgh University and Lincoln College, Oxford, and now lives in London.

Ritchie's approach to English grammar in this entertaining book on the subject is a relief — Sunday Times
This informative read reassures that mastering our language is easier than it seems — Mail on Sunday, Paperback of the Week
A hugely entertaining read, full of attitude and verve and sharp running jokes. And underneath all this lies rigorous linguistic heft, which gives the book real authority — Daily Mail
I learnt a lot about my own language from English for the Natives, and about how our language and our understanding of the world have developed in tandem. And I particularly appreciated Harry Ritchie's bold dismantling of the metaphysics of Chomskyan structuralism. Wonderful to have such a fresh first-hand observation of how language actually works — Michael Frayn
Essential reading — Nick Hornby
Clear, trenchant, funny, Ritchie makes thinking a pleasure — John Carey
An engaging response to an educational disaster . . . This book is sensible, valuable and written with a sense of fun — TLS
How many new books are there about words, grammar and language? Nonetheless, Harry Ritchie's English for the Natives leaps to the top of the pile for its sharp, good sense, linguistic rigour [and] sense of humour — Marcus Berkmann, The Spectator
On the pleasantly scholarly end of the word book spectrum. Informed by linguistics, it has a particularly good discussion of the controversy between "innatists" (following Chomsky) and others — Guardian

Insider's French: Intermediate Conversation Course (Learn French with the Michel Thomas Method)

Akshay Bakaya
Authors:
Akshay Bakaya

Do you want to be able to express yourself in French with confidence and fluency?Insider's French offers a genuine perspective on Francophone culture, opinions and language use so that you can speak confidently on topical issues that are key to the French speaker today. This intermediate French conversation course, devised for all intermediate-level learners or those following on from Total or Perfect French, will advance your overall fluency, listening comprehension and conversation skills, expand your vocabulary and improve your grammar. Through authentic, lively conversations around engaging topics, and the unique Michel Thomas Method for learning, this course focuses on the colloquial language and conversation strategies used by native French speakers so that you can fit in and communicate more naturally.Michel Thomas, the preeminent language teacher, always said that learners start by mastering basic linguist structures (as in his Total and Perfect courses), which provide the bare walls of the house, but that that it was up to us, the learner, to decorate it in our own personal way. Insider's French reflects Michel Thomas' 'Phase 2' courses that he and his team offered at his New York language school, allowing increased vocabulary, improved speaking, comprehension and reading and writing skills - the tools with which to decorate their houses.Insider's French includes:· Twenty authentic conversations around a comprehensive range of subjects that reflect contemporary French culture· Language plus: conversation strategies, pronunciation and intonation to help learners express themselves naturally· Listening and speaking practice to help learners progress to the next level· Cultural insights into the unspoken rules of the language This ebook includes 10 chapters with integrated audio conversations. Why is the Michel Thomas Method so successful? The Michel Thomas Method draws on the principles of instructional psychology. Knowledge is structured and organised for the student so that you assimilate the language easily and don't forget it. The method deconstructs the language into building blocks that are introduced sequentially in such a way that the learner creates his/her response and moves on to ever-more-complex sentences. Michel said: I will dissect everything into small parts and reassemble it in such a way that one will understand everything step by step.He was also very clear about his ground rules: no memorisation, no drills, no homework; relax and leave off the anxiety normally associated with language learning.
