Short Cuts To Happiness

How I found the meaning of life from a barber’s chair

By Tal Ben-Shahar

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

From the New York Times bestselling psychologist who taught us how to be happier, an intimate, keepsake collection of wisdoms he learned from a most unlikely source.

Even a New York Times-bestselling happiness expert can need advice!

In his trailblazing Harvard courses, internationally bestselling books, and lectures and videos, positive psychologist Tal Ben-Shahar has shared his essential, scientifically backed tools for finding fulfillment the world over. But even the happiness expert needs a boost from time to time! Tal found his not in a guru or fellow psychologist, but rather in his longtime neighborhood barber, Avi-a man with a gift for making his clients look and feel great with wisdom beyond his years.

Tal's visits to Avi soon grew into a friendship deeper than most. Between snips, the two men talked about everything from family and starting a business to the meaning of life and the power of music. Two years of their revelatory barbershop talk have been distilled into these gems of inspiration-perfect to give, receive, and share, even between haircuts.

'A charming read to remind you that wisdom about happiness is often right around the corner.' - Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals, and co-author of Option B with Sheryl Sandberg

'When a happiness expert like Ben-Shahar turns to someone else for advice, you know the advice has got to be good. Short Cuts to Happiness offers accessible, universal wisdom that puts a life of meaning and fulfilment within reach and sets a very high bar for my next trip to the barber!' - Colin Beavan, author of No Impact Man and How to Be Alive

'Who knew that a trip to the barber could offer the secret to a happy life? In Short Cuts to Happiness, Tal Ben-Shahar shows how powerful insights grow from simple words of wisdom and how happiness can be found in surprising places - the smell of lilies, a good laugh, or a casual chat with a barber. In these pages, the pioneer of positive psychology finds a whole new way to help readers understand what it means to live life to its fullest. Like a great haircut, this book will leave you feeling sharper, more energized, and eager to take on the world.' - Alex Palmer, New York Times-bestselling author

'Deeply rewarding and wholly unforgettable' Bret Anthony Johnston, author of Remember Me Like This 'Beautifully written' Blake MorrisonMaddy is sixteen. Deeply curious, wry and vivacious, she's poised at the outset of adulthood. She has loyal friends, a mother with whom she's unusually close, a father she's never met, devoted grandparents, and a crush on a boy named Jack. Maddy also has cancer.Hungry for experience despite living in the shadow of illness, Maddy seeks out her first romantic relationship, ponders philosophical questions, finds solace in music and art, and tracks down her father, Antonio. She continually tests the depths and limits of her closeness with her mother, while Eve has to come to terms with the daughter she loves and only partly knows, in a world she can't control. For fans of Celeste Ng and John Boyne, All the Water in the World is the story of a family doing its best when faced with the worst. Told in the alternating voices of Maddy and her mother, Eve, the narrative moves between the family's lake house in Pennsylvania, their home in Washington, DC, and London. Unforgettable and singularly moving, with voices that range from tender to funny, despairing to defiant, this novel is a poignant testimony to the transformative power of love, humour and hope. Optioned for film by Monumental Pictures/Lionsgate.

The Mind Monster Solution

Hazel Gale
Authors:
Hazel Gale

We all do things that we wish we wouldn't in life. We underperform, procrastinate, push people away and say the wrong things. But what if we could find a way to beat our destructive tendencies at their own game? Fight explains the psychology of self-sabotage and offers techniques for taking control of your thoughts, to maximise success and thrive. While training as a competitive boxer and kickboxer, Hazel Gale developed anxiety issues that led to emotional and physical burnout. Cognitive hypnotherapy helped her get back into competition after illness and turn her life around - she felt compelled to spread its profound benefits and is now one of the most sought-after practitioners in the country.Cognitive hypnotherapy understands that the unconscious and conscious minds have different priorities and that the unconscious governs a large percentage of our behaviour. It is this part of the mind that is responsible for self-sabotage and in order to tackle unwanted emotional or behavioural issues, we need to communicate with it. Fight is a one-to-one therapy session with Hazel that will show you how to address the psychological blocks that hold you back, equip you with the tools to manage negative emotions, overcome them and emerge victorious. You'll learn how to battle those inner monsters and let go of limitations, to reach your true potential and live a happier, more fulfilling life.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED IF LIFE IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING?This is a book about all the unwanted and unexpected moments in our lives. They surprise us, they blindside us. They shock us. They command our attention. Some bounce off us, other strike deep into our being. These moments are collision points between how we see life and how life actually is. These are lifeshocks. In her new book Sophie explains how lifeshocks awaken us. She offers her own deeply personal story as well as other case studies as a vehicle for bringing the theory and teachings to life. She focuses on three kinds of lifeshocks we all receive: limiting lifeshocks which challenge our arrogance and appetite for control; exposing lifeshocks which challenge our affectations and pretences; and evoking lifeshocks which challenge our closed-heartedness.This groundbreaking new book reveals how these lifeshocks can bring healing, transformation and peace.

Dadlife

Simon Hooper, Father of Daughters
Authors:
Simon Hooper, Father of Daughters

'This is the story of my journey into parenthood, from being a 24 year old man-child with no idea of what being a dad involved, to where I find myself today: the single male representative in a household of five women, or in other words, outnumbered. Our house is now known as "the place where silence came to die". It's also where you'll find carpets that are made up of 50% glitter and where there are more pink stuffed animals than at a colour-blind taxidermy specialists. But I wouldn't change a thing. These people are my life.'From uninitiated parents-to-be to those who know the ropes in families large or small, everyone will find something to relate to in Simon's hilarious and chaotic tales of his own home life. His observations of being a father have delighted his hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram: before now dads are often the forgotten ones who carry the luggage, open stiff jars, take photos on holiday, fix broken bikes, go back to work, do the night feeds and make a mean beans on toast with melted cheese without so much as a pat on the back. All too often dads shrink into the background. But not in this book. Forever Outnumbered is an incredibly funny yet emotionally heartfelt ode to modern family life.

With an infectiously positive outlook and happy take on all things mum-related, Giovanna has developed a following of fellow parents and mums-to-be.This is not a book about how to have the perfect family experience - Gi would be the first to admit she is winging it just as much as the rest of us - instead it is an honest, upbeat and incredibly personal account of her own experience of having a family. Embracing Uncertainty

Susan Jeffers
Authors:
Susan Jeffers

'Susan Jeffers' wisdom feels like a precious gift. Her counsel is profound and meaningful in such challenging times.' MARIANNE WILLIAMSON'Original, courageous and brilliant!' WARREN FARRELL* * * * * * * * * *Nobody knows what will happen in the next moment of our lives. Whatever is in store for us, the only thing we CAN be sure of is that nothing in life is certain. And since we all fear the unknown, life's uncertainty can be a constant source of worry to us.But, as bestselling author Susan Jeffers explains, life doesn't have to be one worry after the next, a steady stream of 'what if's', and a constant attempt to create a secure haven for ourselves. In EMBRACING UNCERTAINTY she emphasises that an unknown future doesn't prevent a rich and abundant life, and shows how by enjoying life's unpredictability we transform ourselves from a position of fear to one filled with excitement and potential. Through invaluable case-studies, exercises and her pragmatic wisdom, Susan convinces us, above all, that life is exhilarating because of, not in spite of the uncertainty.
