Teach Yourself to Fly

The classic guide to flying a plane

By Nigel Tangye

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

Learn how to fly an aeroplane with this gorgeous, lovingly reproduced classic from Mr. Nigel Tangye, a leading aeronautical journalist, author and expert flier. First published in 1938, Teach Yourself to Fly was one of the first titles published in the Teach Yourself series.

First published in 1938, Teach Yourself To Fly was not only one of the very first Teach Yourself books to be published but the first to actually change the world. It was used on the eve of the second world war to prepare pilot recruits and conscripts before they were called for service, and as such it was read religiously by thousands of young men, some as young as 17, and directly impacted on the British war effort.

This beautiful new printing of the book captures all of the feelings of that extraordinary time - it's nostalgic, understated, inspiring and very British indeed, warning young pilots, amongst other things, not to feel 'too discouraged' in the event of a crash landing.

Technology has changed hugely, but the principles of aviation as they were in the middle of the twentieth century are perfectly summarised in this lovely book. Get hold of the right vehicle, and it really can teach you to fly.

What happens when you're up there, however, is your responsibility.

Since 1938, millions of people have learned to do the things they love with Teach Yourself. Welcome to the how-to guides that changed the modern world.

Biographical Notes

Nigel Trevithick Tangye was a British airman, novelist, journalist and the author of various books about Cornwall. He worked for MI5, and later claimed to have been an MI5 agent during the Spanish Civil War. He was married to the actress Ann Todd.

Teach Yourself to Live

C G L Du Cann
Authors:
C G L Du Cann

Teach Yourself To Live is a self-help classic from a very distant age. Then, as now, the self-help world was dominated by energetic Americans preaching the secrets of limitless achievement. But from the off this delightfully dry, wise and pragmatic book offers something quite different - a sober, somewhat stern, but ultimately generous guide to living in a world blighted by modernity and taxes.Nostalgic, funny and charming, this book somewhat bad-temperedly insists the reader not get ideas above his or her station - yet it ends up delivering a bracing, empowering guide to knowing yourself and living well (despite it all). Oliver Burkeman called this book "a place of stability and solid ground amid the rushing omnibuses". Full of fascinating and unexpected revelations, Teach Yourself To Live flips self-help on its head and provides a marvellous insight into the way we used to feel about life and how to live it.Since 1938, millions of people have learned to do the things they love with Teach Yourself. Welcome to the how-to guides that changed the modern world.

Christine Jones
Authors:
Christine Jones

Essential Welsh Grammar will help you get more out of your study of Welsh. Essential Welsh Grammar is an up-to-date introduction to Welsh grammar. You don't need to know a lot about grammar before you start. Everything is explained simply and there are lots of examples to illustrate each point. Unlike more traditional grammars, Essential Welsh Grammar is structured so that you can look up language forms according to what you want to say, even if you don't know the grammatical term for them. If you already know some grammar, then you can use the 'reference grammar' section at the back of the book to look up the points you need. The course consists of 27 units illustrating the various uses to which the language can be put, for example, giving instructions or talking about the recent past. The more traditional reference grammar deals with grammatical structures, such as the imperative or the perfect tense. All grammatical terms are explained in the glossary at the back of the book. Each unit contains exercises for you to practise what you have learnt and there is a key at the back of the book for you to check your answers. The new page design in this edition means that the book is even easier to use and the main headings are in English so that you can find your way around the book quickly. This edition contains a 'taking it further' section which will direct you to further sources of real Welsh. Essential Welsh Grammar will help you to understand and manipulate Welsh grammar with confidence because:- you need no prior knowledge of grammatical terminology to use it;- the approach is accessible and supportive;- the examples are clear and in context;- exercises help you practise every point.
