Teach Yourself to Fly

The classic guide to flying a plane

By Nigel Tangye

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

Learn how to fly an aeroplane with this gorgeous, lovingly reproduced classic from Mr. Nigel Tangye, a leading aeronautical journalist, author and expert flier. First published in 1938, Teach Yourself to Fly was one of the first titles published in the Teach Yourself series.

First published in 1938, Teach Yourself To Fly was not only one of the very first Teach Yourself books to be published but the first to actually change the world. It was used on the eve of the second world war to prepare pilot recruits and conscripts before they were called for service, and as such it was read religiously by thousands of young men, some as young as 17, and directly impacted on the British war effort.

This beautiful new printing of the book captures all of the feelings of that extraordinary time - it's nostalgic, understated, inspiring and very British indeed, warning young pilots, amongst other things, not to feel 'too discouraged' in the event of a crash landing.

Technology has changed hugely, but the principles of aviation as they were in the middle of the twentieth century are perfectly summarised in this lovely book. Get hold of the right vehicle, and it really can teach you to fly.

What happens when you're up there, however, is your responsibility.

Since 1938, millions of people have learned to do the things they love with Teach Yourself. Welcome to the how-to guides that changed the modern world.

Biographical Notes

Nigel Trevithick Tangye was a British airman, novelist, journalist and the author of various books about Cornwall. He worked for MI5, and later claimed to have been an MI5 agent during the Spanish Civil War. He was married to the actress Ann Todd.

With a few sorry exceptions, it's heartening to think that the gardener or bird-spotter of the 1950s or 60s would immediately recognise most of the songs that sing out over English gardens today. For the amateur ornithologist of the twenty first century, Teach Yourself Bird Watching will be as much of a delight now as it ever was - a beautifully written, precise guide to identifying, protecting and encouraging birdlife in your garden and beyond.Since 1938, millions of people have learned to do the things they love with Teach Yourself. Welcome to the how-to guides that changed the modern world.

Teach Yourself Cycling

Reg Shaw
Authors:
Reg Shaw

First published in 1953, Teach Yourself Cycling is a beautiful, lovingly reproduced window into a distant age, where understanding the good manners of the road and enjoying the innocence of the family picnic dominated life on two wheels.Yet few vehicles have changed as little as the bicycle in the 65 years since this book first published. For all that they have become immeasurably lighter and better adapted to a range of terrains, the basic mechanics remain the same - and a deeply recognisable spirit of joy runs through this book, even though the author, Reginald Shaw, feels he needs to reassure his readers that cycling can be "a pleasurable activity as well as a mode of transport".This book is perfect for fans of cycling interested in how the art and practice of riding a bike has changed. From a stout defence of 'the good manners of the road' to a surge of enthusiasm when mapping out the itinerary of a good cycling holiday, this book is warm, interesting and enlightening.Since 1938, millions of people have learned to do the things they love with Teach Yourself. Welcome to the how-to guides that changed the modern world.

Love from Boy

'Dear Mama, I am having a lovely time here. We play football every day here. The beds have no springs . . .'So begins the first letter that a nine-year-old Roald Dahl penned to his mother, Sofie Magdalene, under the watchful eye of his boarding-school headmaster. For most of his life, Roald Dahl would continue to write weekly letters to his mother, chronicling his adventures, frustrations and opinions, from the delights of childhood to the excitements of flying as a World War II fighter pilot and the thrill of meeting top politicians and movie stars during his time as a diplomat and spy in Washington. And, unbeknown to Roald, his mother lovingly kept every single one of them.Sofie was, in many ways, Roald's first reader. It was she who encouraged him to tell stories and nourished his desire to fabricate, exaggerate and entertain. Reading these letters, you can see Roald practicing his craft, developing the dark sense of humour and fantastical imagination that would later produce such timeless tales as The BFG, Matilda, Fantastic Mr Fox and The Witches. The letters in Love from Boy are littered with jokes and madcap observations; sometimes serious, sometimes tender, and often outrageous. To eavesdrop on a son's letters to his mother is to witness Roald Dahl turning from a boy to a man, and finally becoming a writer.Praise for Storyteller'A truly magnificent biography . . . a masterly account' A N Wilson'Superb . . . hugely readable' Sunday Telegraph
