Fight

Win Freedom From Self-Sabotage

By Hazel Gale

  • Hardback
  • £18.99

Imagine a life without limitation - learn techniques to combat self-doubt, maximise success and improve everyday happiness.

On a cold December afternoon in 2013, Hazel Gale was declared the English ABA Boxing Champion. On paper, this wasn't her greatest success in sport, nor was it even her best-fought bout. But as her hand was raised that day, Hazel felt a surge of alien emotion. She wasn't sure whether it was happiness, pride or just a good old-fashioned sense of achievement. But it was new. Looking back, she can tell you that what she'd felt upon winning up until that day had been shame. This time, she owned the triumph.

Competing in the sports of kickboxing and boxing for almost a decade, Hazel battled with the monsters of her mind on a daily basis - anxiety, depression, eating disorders and, eventually, burnout. FIGHT takes you on her journey from a life of fearful self-destruction to that moment when she finally felt deserving of success.
With self-awareness comes immense power. It was cognitive hypnotherapy that helped Hazel uncover both the root of her problem and the key to her recovery. Ultimately, it was her monster that showed her the way back into the ring and to a state of emotional and physical balance. Feeling compelled to share these profound benefits, she qualified as a therapist and is now one of the most sought-after practitioners in the country.

Fight is like a one-to-one session with Hazel. Through vulnerable storytelling, digestible theory and pocket-sized therapeutic processes, this book will teach you how to alchemise your moments of self-sabotage.

It's time to emerge victorious from your own battles, whatever they may be.

Biographical Notes

Hazel Gale is a master practitioner of cognitive hypnotherapy, author and ex-athlete. Having competed internationally as a kickboxer and boxer, achieving World and National titles in the two sports respectively, she's well-versed in both the drive to succeed and the anxiety that can so often come hand-in-hand with that. In her practice and in her writing, Hazel aims to help others emerge victorious from their own battles, whatever they may be.

Fight is Hazel's first book. It explores the psychology of self-sabotage while taking you on her journey, and offers a practical guide to reclaiming your self-control.

10% Happier

Dan Harris
Authors:
Dan Harris

The perfect book for the spirituality sceptics who really do need meditation in their daily routine.10% HAPPIER is a spiritual book written for - and by - someone who would otherwise never read a spiritual book. It is both a deadly serious and seriously funny look at mindfulness and meditation as the next big public health revolution.Dan Harris always believed the restless, relentless, impossible-to-satisfy voice in his head was one of his greatest assets. How else can you climb the ladder in an ultra-competitive field like TV news except through nonstop hand-wringing and hyper vigilance? For a while, his strategy worked. Harris anchored national broadcasts and he covered wars. Then he hit the brakes, and had a full-blown panic attack live on the air. What happened next was completely unforeseen. Through a bizarre series of events - involving a disgraced evangelical pastor, a mysterious self-help guru and a fateful gift from his wife - Harris stumbled upon something that helped him tame the voice in his head: meditation. At first, he was deeply suspicious. He had long associated meditation with bearded swamis and unwashed hippies. But when confronted with mounting scientific evidence that just a few minutes a day can literally rewire the brain for focus, happiness, and reduced reactivity, Harris took a deep dive. He spent years mingling with scientists, executives and marines on the front lines of a quiet revolution that has the potential to reshape society. He became a daily meditator, and even found himself on a ten-day, silent meditation retreat, which was simultaneously the best and worst experience he'd ever had.Harris's life was not transformed into a parade of rainbows and unicorns, but he did gain a passion for daily meditation. While the book itself is a narrative account of Dan's conversion amid the harried and decidedly non-Zen world of the newsroom, it concludes with a section for the novice on how to get started.(P)2014 HarperCollinsPublishers

The Art of the Good Life

Rolf Dobelli
Authors:
Rolf Dobelli

Since antiquity, i.e. for at least 2,500 years and probably much longer, people have been asking themselves what it means to live a good life. How should I live? What constitutes a good life? What's the role of fate? What's the role of money? Is leading a good life a question of mindset, or is it more about reaching your goals? Is it better to actively seek happiness or to avoid unhappiness? Each generation poses these questions anew, and somehow the answers are always fundamentally disappointing. Why? Because we're constantly searching for a single principle, a single tenet, a single rule. Yet this holy grail - a single, simple path - doesn't exist.Over the past few decades, a silent revolution has taken place within various fields of thought. Within science, politics, medicine and many other areas, scholars have come to realise that the world is far too complicated to summarise in one big idea or handful of principles. We need a toolkit of mental models in order to understand the world. It's high time somebody compiled a similar toolkit designed for practical living. Voilà. Here you'll find fifty-two such intellectual tools - they may not guarantee you a good life, but they'll give you a better chance.

La Bella Figura

Beppe Severgnini
Authors:
Beppe Severgnini

'First of all, let's get one thing straight. Your Italy and out Italia are not the same thing. Italy is a soft drug peddled in predictable packages such as hills in the sunset, olive groves, white wine and raven haired girls. Italia, on the other hand, is a maze. It's alluring but complicated. In Italia you can go round and round in circles for years. Which of course, is great fun.' Beppe Severgnini was The Economist's Italian correspondent for ten years. A huge Anglophile as well as an astute observer of his countrymen, he's the perfect companion for this hilarious tour of modern Italy that takes you behind the seductive face it puts on for visitors - la bella figura - and uncovers the far more complex, paradoxical true self. Alongside the historic cities and glorious countryside, there'll be stops at the places where the Italians reveal themselves in all their authentic, maddening glory: the airport, the motorway and the living room. Ten days, thirty places. From north to south, from food to politics, from saintliness to sexuality. This witty and beguiling examination will help you understand why Italy, as Beppe says, 'can have you fuming and then purring in the space of a hundred metres or ten minutes.'
