An intimate portrait of what makes a rock star by Virginia Grohl, the mother of Dave Grohl, one of the generation's most gifted and loved musicians. From Cradle to Stage features an exclusive introduction by Dave Grohl.

Virginia Grohl, mother of Dave Grohl, had not seen any of it coming. Not the arenas of screaming fans, not Nirvana or the Foo Fighters, not the induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and certainly not her son, Dave, performing with Sir Paul McCartney at The White House. Theirs had always been a life full of music - the Grohl family sang together on long car trips, harmonising to Motown and David Bowie - yet Virginia never expected her son to become a musician. But when Virginia saw Nirvana play for the first time to crazed applause from thousands of screaming fans, she knew nothing would ever be the same. She was the mother of a rock star.

And as Virginia watched her son's star rise, she often wondered about the other mothers who raised sons and daughters who became rock stars. Were they as surprised as she was about their children's fame? Virginia often wondered about the mystical force that urges some of us to listen, to play, to surround ourselves with music. She wanted to talk about it with the other mothers whose sons and daughters were sharing stages with Dave, and she decided to seek them out wherever they were. So began a two-year odyssey, where she had conversations with such women from all over the world as Verna Griffin, Dr Dre's mother, Carolyn Williams, Pharell William's mother, Janis Winehouse, Amy Winehouse's mother, Patsy Noah, Adam Levine's mother, Donna Haim, mother to the Haim sisters and Hester Diamond, Mike D of The Beastie Boys' mother, to name just a few.

From Cradle to Stage will appeal to mothers everywhere, but particularly to those with children who march (or play) to the beat of their own drum; and it's for those children who have their mothers to thank for everything. For music lovers and rock fans, it's the ultimate backstage pass-for anyone who has wondered what it's like to be on the inside...looking out at a packed arena.

Featuring a foreword by Dave Grohl, interviews are interwoven with the Grohl family story and the resultant book is a very intimate portrait of what makes a rock star.

Biographical Notes

Virginia Hanlon Grohl, the mother of Grammy-winning rock star Dave Grohl, retired from a thirty-year teaching career, then jumped on tour buses and planes to travel to rock shows throughout the U.S. and Europe with her son and the Foo Fighters. Her next tour, travelling to meet the mothers of other stars, provided the profiles for her first book, From Cradle to Stage.
She's now enjoying a quieter time in her Sherman Oaks, California home being constantly amazed by the gourmet meals her daughter and son entertain her with (a far cry from their PB & J days) and the wondrous, every-changing beauty of her three granddaughters.

Pie and Mash on the Roman Road

Melanie McGrath
Authors:
Melanie McGrath

G Kelly's Pie and Mash has been run by the same family in the Roman Road in Bow for nearly a hundred years; an East End institution and the still point of a turning world. Outside its windows the Roman Road has seen an extraordinary revolution - from women's liberation and industrialisation to wars and immigration - and yet at its heart it remains one of the last traditional market roads of London.Pie and Mash on the Roman Road is the biography of that shop and of the people - customers, suppliers, employees, owners - who passed through it, and continue to do so. Through vivid tales of ordinary lives the book will tell the extraordinary story of the community living around the oldest trading route in Britain, and the true heart of the East End.

The End of Loneliness: The International Bestseller

Benedict Wells

Benedict Wells

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLERWINNER OF THE 2016 EUROPEAN UNION PRIZE FOR LITERATUREI've known Death a long time but now Death knows me.When their idyllic childhood is shattered by the sudden death of their parents, siblings Marty, Liz and Jules are sent to a bleak state boarding school. Once there, the orphans' lives change tracks: Marty throws himself into academic life; Liz is drawn to dark forms of escapism; and Jules transforms from a vivacious child to a withdrawn teenager. I began to be afraid of the dark, afraid of death, afraid of eternity. I was alone. And then I met Alva. The only one who can bring him out of his shell is his mysterious classmate Alva, who hides a dark past of her own, but despite their obvious love for one another, the two leave school on separate paths. Our last meeting suddenly felt like yesterday again, except that yesterday was many years ago. Years later, just as it seems that they can make amends for time wasted, the past catches up with them, and fate - or chance - will once again alter the course of a life. Told through the fractured lives of the siblings, The End of Loneliness is a heartfelt, enriching novel about loss and loneliness, family and love.

The Book What I Wrote

Eddie Braben
Authors:
Eddie Braben

With his recent theatrical success, THE PLAY WHAT I WROTE, Braben shows that the audience for the spirit of the incomparable Eric and Ernie is just as alive today as it was in their glory years. Now, the key figure behind their success, scriptwriter Braben, has written his autobiography - with the inimitable, timeless humour, warmth and affection for Eric and Ernie of that wonderful bygone era which made their classic sketches so successful. From Liverpool to London and on to Snowdonia, Braben peppers his story with wonderful anecdotes about the original straight man and his amiable sidekick. The Book What I Wrote is as much a unique biography of the charismatic Eric and Ernie as it is an autiobiography of the man on whose gags their success was made.

Monty Don

Monty Don

THE TOP 3 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERNIGEL - One of Britain's favourite dogs! When Monty Don's golden retriever Nigel became the surprise star of BBC Gardeners' World inspiring huge interest, fan mail and his own social media accounts, Monty Don wanted to explore what makes us connect with animals quite so deeply. In many respects Nigel is a very ordinary dog; charming, handsome and obedient, as so many are. He is also a much loved family pet. He is also a star. By telling Nigel's story, Monty relates his relationships with the other special dogs in his life in a memoir of his dogs past and very much present. Witty, touching and life-affirming, Nigel: My family and other dogs is wonderfully heart-warming. Monty Don is a great writer coming out of the garden and into the hearts and homes of every dog lover in the UK.'I have always had a dog, or dogs. I cannot imagine life without them. I am just as much a fan of Nigel as any besotted viewer. In the book I explore why we love dogs and what they mean to us emotionally and domestically. I look back on all the dogs in my life - all of which I have loved deeply and which have been an essential part of my life. So, this is the book of Nigel - but also the book of all our dogs in every British family and a celebration of the deep love we feel for them' Monty Don

'If you've ever felt a little lost, I hope this book finds its way to you' - Daisy Buchanan 'Everyone is writing about sex. Some are even doing it. Haven't we all been waiting for someone to look at what happens when you opt out, and to do it with not only humour...but also true empowerment? Call off the search. At last, here she is' - The GuylinerWhen the man Laura Jane Williams thought she would wed dumped her and married her friend, she was devastated. Empty. Drinking too much, sleeping around, and moving from place-to-place, refusing to put down roots, she tried to fill the void - the gaping hole - that heartbreak had left behind. She wanted control. To grab life by the balls. To live boldly. But, she rapidly learned it wasn't that simple.Resolving that life couldn't go on as it was and that the backlog of men and sadness that haunted her would not define her, Laura declared a year-long vow of celibacy. And in a Riviera convent as she slowly put pieces of herself back together. An honest exploration of a young woman's soul and a road trip through Italy, America, Paris and...Derby, BECOMING is a book that makes you laugh and makes you cry, but most of all? It makes you realise that even when the going gets tough, no one is really f*cking up like they think they are.

Cheer Up Love

Susan Calman
Authors:
Susan Calman

'HEARTBREAKING AND HEART-WARMING: UNMISSABLE' Damian Barr, Metro'SUSAN CALMAN NEVER FAILS TO MAKE ME HOOT WITH LAUGHTER' Sarah MillicanSusan Calman is a well known comedian and writer who appears on countless radio and television programmes including The News Quiz, Just a Minute and now Strictly Come Dancing 2017. Her solo stand up show, Susan Calman is Convicted, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and dealt with subjects like the death penalty, appearance and depression. The reaction to the show she wrote about mental health was so positive that she wanted to expand on the show and write a more detailed account of surviving when you're the world's most negative person. The Crab of Hate is the personification of Calman's depression and her version of the notorious Black Dog. A constant companion in her life, the Crab has provided her with the best, and very worst of times. This is a very personal memoir of how, after many years and with a lot of help and talking, she has embraced her dark side and realised that she can be the most joyous sad person you'll ever meet. CHEER UP LOVE IS FUNNY, POIGNANT AND (HOPEFULLY) INFORMATIVE.IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO TALK.
