The Women Who Shaped Politics

Empowering stories of women who have shifted the political landscape

By Sophy Ridge

  • Hardback
  • £20.00

From royalty to suffragettes and from campaigners to contemporary rebels, Sky News Presenter Sophy Ridge explains the ways that women have changed the face of politics.

Sophy Ridge, presenter for Sky News, has uncovered the extraordinary stories of the women who have shaped British politics.

Never has the role of women in the political world ever been more on the news agenda, and Sophy has interviewed current and former politicians including among others, Nicola Sturgeon, Ruth Davidson, Betty Boothroyd gain exclusive insight into the role women play in politics at the highest level. The book also includes Theresa May's first at-length interview about her journey to becoming Prime Minister.

These interviews have revealed the shocking truth about the sexism that is rife among the House of Commons both in the past and today, with sometimes astonishing, and sometimes amusing anecdotes revealing how women in Westminster have worked to counter the gender bias.

Sophy provides gripping insight into historical and contemporary stories which will fascinate not just those interested in politics but those who want to know more about women's vital role in democracy.

From royalty to writers and from class warriors to suffragettes, Sophy tells the story of those who put their lives on the line for equal rights, and those who were the first to set foot inside the chambers of power, bringing together stories that you may think you know, and stories that have recently been discovered to reveal the truth about what it is to be a woman in Westminster.

This book is a celebration of the differing ways that women have shaped the political landscape. The book also, importantly, sheds light on the challenges faced by women in government today, telling us the ways that women working in politics battle the sexism that confront them on a daily basis.

100 Nasty Women of History

Hannah Jewell
Authors:
Hannah Jewell

100 fascinating and brilliantly written stories about history's bravest, baddest but little known 'nasty' women from across the world. In the final debate of the 2016 US presidential election, Donald Trump leaned into the microphone as Hillary Clinton spoke about social security and called his opponent 'such a nasty woman'. The phrase has stuck around and has since become something of a badge of honour for women around the world. What better time than now, then, for us to look back and learn a thing or two from the 'nasty' women of the past? Compiled and written by BuzzFeed writer Hannah Jewell, 100 Nasty Women of History contains profiles of women from across every century, race and continent, united in the fact that they were all a bit 'nasty'. From 3rd-century Japanese Empress Jingu to 20th-century British social reformer Octavia Hill, these are the women who were bold and powerful, but maybe put people (men's) backs up by being so. 100 Nasty Women of History is an accessible, intelligent, hilarious (and sometimes sweary) guide to the history-making women whom you probably don't know - but definitely should.(P)2017 Hodder & Stoughton Limited

'Unputdownable' Alexander McCall Smith'One of the most unforgettable journalists I have ever met' Chris Patten'She was a pioneer' Kate Adie OBEThe biography of acclaimed 20th century journalist Clare Hollingworth who scooped the outbreak of World War 2.After an illustrious career spanning the 20th century legendary journalist Clare Hollingworth died in Hong Kong aged 105 in January 2017. She was famous for getting 'the scoop of the century': the outbreak of the Second World War. From witnessing the first aerial bombings against England in the First World War, through Hitler's Blitzkrieg, Clare's résumé included desert war in North Africa, civil war in Greece, terrorism in Jerusalem, naming Philby as the Third Man, and guerrilla warfare in Vietnam and Borneo. She had an uncanny ability to make headlines throughout her century-long life. And although her style of journalism was very different from the 24-hour breaking rolling news we have today, the need for detailed eye-witness reporting seems even more important today as we face an onslaught of fake news and alternative facts. The story is not just about news and war however: through access to family papers and personal accounts, her great-nephew Patrick Garrett is able to show Clare in three dimensions, explain her life and loves, and show how she dealt with the pressures of life as a correspondent - decades before women were routinely accepted in this role.facebook.com/celebrateclaretwitter.com/celebrateclare(P)2017 John Murray Press

The New Capitalism

Robert Peston
Authors:
Robert Peston

It's been the worst financial and economic crisis since the 1930s and we're not through it yet. For banks, it's been a debacle like no other. To keep banks alive, $15 trillion of financial aid has been pledged to them by taxpayers - that's more than $2000 for every person on the planet. But believe it or not, it could all have been even worse, an economic Armageddon. If the old capitalism failed, have we really learned anything? Or are we frantically trying to return to our bad old business ways? In the West, we've been living beyond our means for years. Do any of us in the US and UK really understand the painful implications of the new economic reality, that we can no longer borrow as much as we'd like to maintain our living standards? In Who Runs Britain, Robert Peston warned that there was a serious economic storm on the way. Now, in The New Capitalism, he exposes the naiveté and complacency of bankers and the authorities when confronted with the unmistakable signs that calamity was on the horizon. Peston will also show how the onset of that storm has changed the economic landscape forever and what that means for all of us - the jobs that will be available, the skills we'll need, how we'll save, how our banks and big companies will be run, the new compact between the public and private sectors. Just like Who Runs Britain, this is a book we can't afford to ignore.
