Cheer Up Love

Adventures in depression with the Crab of Hate

By Susan Calman

  • Paperback
  • £9.99

'Nothing makes me happier than talking about depression. Packed with stories, humour and a bit of the serious stuff, I will literally write the book on how it feels to be told "Cheer up, Love"' Susan Calman

'DEEPLY HONEST, SURPRISINGLY HILARIOUS AND UPLIFTING' The Pool 'HEART-WARMING: UNMISSABLE' Damian Barr, Metro

Susan Calman is a well-known comedian and writer who has appeared on countless radio and television programmes from The News Quiz and Just a Minute on BBC Radio 4, presented Armchair Detectives and Secret Scotland, hosts the podcast Mrs Brightside and stole the nation's hearts in STRICTLY COME DANCING 2017. Her solo stand up show, Susan Calman is Convicted, was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and dealt with subjects like the death penalty, appearance and depression.
It was the overwhelming and positive reaction to the show she wrote about mental health that made Susan want to write a more detailed account of surviving depression when you're the world's most negative and anxious person.
The Crab of Hate is the personification of Calman's depression and her version of the notorious Black Dog. A constant companion all her life, the Crab has provided her with the best, and very worst of times. This is a very personal and affecting memoir of how, after many years and with a lot of help and talking, Susan has embraced her dark side and realised that she can be the most joyous sad person you'll ever meet.

CHEER UP LOVE IS FUNNY, POIGNANT AND (HOPEFULLY) INFORMATIVE.
IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO TALK AND TO REALISE YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

Fantastic, funny, moving... A perceptive look at depression - with added laughs' — Viv Groskop

Deeply personal and painfully honest but funny — The Times Scotland
Calman's account of depression, though deeply honest, is surprisingly hilarious and uplifting — Hannah Varrell, The Pool

Talked with engaging candour and humour about her own struggle to keep it at bay — Scotsman (Edinburgh Book Festival coverage)
A breezily accessible account — Metro
Wonderfully funny — BBC Woman's Hour
Candid and often laugh-out-loud-funny... There's no sense that Cheer Up Love is a deliberate act of catharsis or an attempt to hasten any kind of healing process. Instead Calman presents herself as a woman who has already come to terms with who she is — Sunday Herald
A compelling memoir... engaging insight... Susan's outstanding sense of humour shines through to create an uplifting survival handbook — The Lady

This is a book that, like a female stereotype, multitasks. For those who suffer from bouts of depression and mental illness it provides solace, understanding and advice. For those living with or close to people suffering from depression, it gives you insight into why some of your well meant but unhelpful or even damaging suggestions seem to fall on deaf ears. If you picked it up purely to find out what makes Susan Calman tick, where she comes from and incidents that shaped the comedian and writer here today, there's that too! — Kate Stone, Funny Women
More use than a standard self-help book — National
Her story is a pleasure to read... Calman's warmth and humour shines through — AND Guide

***PRAISE FOR SUSAN CALMAN***
Glasgow-born comic Calman is a dead-cert-one-to-watch; she's got an infectious bubbly manner but a caustic edge too, and both can yield comedy gold

— Guardian
Feisty Scot Calman is one of the best female comics to ever come out of the land of bagpipes and haggis. She'll make you chuckle your pants off — Time Out
Calman fizzed manic energy, alternating between confessional tales and playing with facts she teased out of the audience — Edinburgh Evening News
surely prove as useful for those in contact with depressives as it is for sufferers... the authenticity of her stories resonates more than any more formal study of depression ever could... darkly funny. — Chortle

Anxiety is Your Superpower

Wendy Suzuki
Authors:
Wendy Suzuki

We live in an age of anxiety. Like an omnipresent yet invisible odour you've grown used to, anxiety has become a constant condition, a fact of life, and a distraction that undermines our quality of life. Dr Wendy Suzuki's ground-breaking research will show us that science tells us a very different story: yes, anxiety is unpleasant - it's meant to be - and in the debilitating extreme, what Wendy will call 'bad anxiety', it's destructive. But most of the anxiety that humans feel is essential - not only to survival, but for higher brain functions formerly thought to be put on hold during anxious moments, Wendy will provide two broad categories of neuroscience-based hacks for harnessing anxiety and facing it head-on. The first will help address and calm anxiety so that you can enjoy the productivity you will experience, and the second grouping of brain science hacks will enable readers to channel anxious feelings into six uses for good anxiety - from productivity, increased emotional intelligence and focus to creativity and confidence. Through Wendy's unique perspective as a neuroscientist, she will teach us how to flip anxiety on its head and offer a counterintuitive lens through which to understand how anxiety manifests in our everyday lives. The book will introduce a taboo breaking slant on anxiety: we will learn how it can be good for us and that once we learn how to play it at its own game, it can become our superpower!

The Memory Code

Alex Loyd
Authors:
Alex Loyd

Every one of us is the product of our past experiences. Good or bad, everything we do is informed by our memories - or more accurately, what we take away from those memories. But what if you could go back and rewrite the lessons of the past? What if you could turn a road block into a springboard? What if you could change your behaviour by changing your memories?Maybe it sounds too futuristic to be real, but it's both real and possible. Our past doesn't have to dictate our future. Losing weight, ending addiction, improving relationships, improving careers - you can really change these behaviours by altering your memories. In his groundbreaking new book The Memory Code, bestselling author Dr. Alexander Loyd teaches you how, revealing techniques he's been developing for more than 16 years. When we have a negative experience, we develop coping mechanisms to avoid that experience in the future. That can lead to behaviours like overeating, substance abuse, or poor lifestyle choices. By turning negative memories into positive ones, we can change the behaviours at the root of our problems. This process, called memory re-engineering, involves teaching our brains to re-imagine and re-code certain memories that trigger negative associations and the avoidance and coping mechanisms we've developed to deal with them. It means teaching ourselves to rethink those internal images so that instead of producing fear, anxiety and other negative emotions, they produce love, peace and positive associations.

People power works and is changing the world around us. This is a user's guide to activism by one of the UK's biggest names in grass-roots campaigning. Illustrated with lessons from the real world, it is a guide to creating change for anyone who has ever asked themselves 'why hasn't anyone done something about that?'We are taught to believe that only a small group of people in society have the ability to change laws and company policies. That's simply not true any longer - each of is capable of using our experiences to change the world. We just need to use that thing that makes us different, and learn how to channel it. Having worked as a campaigner for the last 11 years, Kajal Odedra of change.org - which is used by 15 million people in the UK - has learned the tricks of the trade that have traditionally been held in circles of power, and believes that everyone should know how to speak up and be heard. Anyway

Kent M Keith
Authors:
Kent M Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centred. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway. These commandments were first written down by Kent M. Keith for student leaders in the 1960s. Over the following years, they spread via word-of-mouth and became greatly valued - adopted by people far and wide. Now, for the first time, Keith's inspiring commandments appear in this life-changing book, with each principle illustrated with inspiring stories from his own life, as well as classic examples from history. They offer a way of living far removed from the lifestyle that strives for the popular symbols of success: wealth, power and fame. Instead, these ten rational principles focus on the enriching personal meaning that comes through living our lives selflessly and without recognition. Through accepting the Paradoxical Commandments and the paradoxical life, we are each truly free to be who we are really meant to be.
