My Autobiography

By Didier Drogba

  • Paperback
  • £9.99

The story of Didier Drogba, who has been one of the most recognisable and decorated footballers in the world for nearly 20 years.

The story of one of the most recognisable and successful players in world football.

Didier Drogba is renowned for his heading ability, sharp shooting and sheer strength. He has played for his native Ivory Coast and for clubs in France, China and Turkey, but it is as a Chelsea striker that he is best known. His feats with Chelsea have made him a cult hero among supporters.

In Didier Drogba's honest and revealing autobiography he will talk about life as an immigrant in Paris, the importance of his education and how finding success later than most professional footballers has kept him grounded.

In 2012 Didier was voted Chelsea's greatest ever player. He talks from a privileged behind-the-scenes position about tactics and how he felt mentally and physically as well as anecdotes from the dressing room. Didier provides unique insight into important and controversial matches from the first trophy he won with them in 2005 to the Premier League title a decade later; as well as what persuaded him to stay when he was at his lowest ebb.

Away from football Drogba has been widely applauded for his involvement in trying to broker peace in the Ivorian civil war - he is a UN Goodwill Ambassador and does a huge amount of work with the Didier Drogba Foundation - Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people.

Go behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge and find out about life on and off the field for this humble Chelsea hero.

Biographical Notes

Didier Drogba played for English club Chelsea as a striker, and is the all-time top scorer and former captain of the Ivory Coast national team.

He is best known for his career at Chelsea, for whom he has scored more goals than any other foreign player and is currently the club's fourth highest goal scorer of all time. In October 2012, he was voted by Chelsea supporters as the club's greatest ever player. He has also been named African Footballer of the Year twice, winning the accolade in 2006 and 2009.

After playing in youth teams, Drogba made his professional debut aged 18 for Ligue 2 club Le Mans, and signed his first professional contract aged 21.

In the summer of 2004, Drogba moved to Chelsea for a club record £24 million fee, making him the most expensive Ivorian player in history. In his debut season he helped the club win their first league title in 50 years, and a year later he won another Premier League title. With a career record of scoring 10 goals in 10 finals winning 10 trophies at club level, Drogba has been referred to as the 'ultimate big game player'.

An Ivory Coast international between 2002 and 2014, Drogba captained the national team from 2006 until his retirement and is the nation's all-time top goalscorer with 65 goals from 104 appearances. On 8 August 2014, he announced his retirement from international football.

The Lizard and the Bee

Johnny Phillips
Authors:
Johnny Phillips

Betting on football matches is a global obsession. More than 100 million people regularly bet on the sport. Less than 1% of them make a profit. There is a further elite within the 1%, a very small number of professional football bettors who make serious money from the enterprise. And at the summit of this select group are two men who make more than anyone else. They are the best. The biggest and smartest players in the $trillion Asian betting market on professional football. Both of them have used their betting winnings to buy the football clubs they supported as boys. They apply the same analytics techniques they employ when betting to the running of their clubs, and next season one of them will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Roman Abramovich as an owner of an English Premier League team. Their names are Tony Bloom and Matt Benham. The world in which Bloom (the Lizard) and Benham (the Bee) have made their fortune is the Asian Market in football betting. In the relatively short time since online betting has been around this market has grown exponentially so that it now rivals stock and bond markets for volume and wealth. The Lizard and the Bee are the dominant masters of this universe. Each has built up a syndicate betting operation that works more like a Wall Street hedge fund than a punter in a betting shop. They employ an army of maths genius 'quants' to crunch the mountains of data they collect on football teams and players from all over the world. The wealth that these operations has generated has let Bloom and Benham live out every football-mad young boy's dream - they have bought the football clubs they supported as lads. Brighton and Brentford have traditionally bounced around the lower reaches of the English football pyramid. But with the financial investment of their multi-millionaire owners, and crucially, the application of cutting edge statistics-based analytical methods honed in the cut-throat world of professional betting, both have enjoyed unprecedented recent success. Brentford are the smallest club in the English Championship by turnover but have consolidated a position as regular playoff contenders. And this season Brighton have out-performed traditional giants of English football like Newcastle and Leeds United to run away with the league and win automatic promotion to the promised land of the English Premier League. The story of the Lizard and the Bee is a story of how two highly intelligent young men spotted the potential in the Asian Handicap market just as it exploded in size. How they mastered the art of finding an edge in the biggest, smartest sports betting market on the planet. How they used the wealth that this prowess brought to by football clubs. And then how they applied the skills forged in the betting markets to the running of their clubs.

Alan Ball: The Man in White Boots

David Tossell
Authors:
David Tossell

It is a special footballer who wins the World Cup as a 21-year-old and ends a two-decade career as one of the most revered players in the history of four clubs. Former England captain Alan Ball was such a man: prodigy at Blackpool, youngest hero of 1966, Championship winner at Everton, British-record signing for the second time at Arsenal and veteran schemer for Southampton - not to mention footwear trend-setter. And all after being told he was too small to succeed in the game.Yet his years as a flat-cap wearing manager consisted mostly of relegation and promotion battles, some successful and some not, and plenty of frustration as he fought to produce winners in his own image and emulate the feats of his playing days. His life already touched tragically by the car crash that killed his father and the loss of his beloved wife Lesley to cancer, Ball died, aged only 61, after suffering a heart attack during a garden blaze.A decade on from his death, and drawing on interviews with family, friends and colleagues including Jimmy Armfield, Sir Geoff Hurst, George Cohen, Gordon Banks, Joe Royle, Mick Channon, Lawrie McMenemy, Francis Lee, George Graham, Frank McLintock, Matthew Le Tissier and many more, Alan Ball: The Man in White Boots is the definitive study of one of English football's most enduring figures.

Cricket in the Eighties

Derek Pringle
Authors:
Derek Pringle

Derek Pringle is finally ready to tell his story of cricket in the 80s. First chosen by England whilst still at university in 1982, Derek featured in the national side for the next 11 years. He played 30 Tests, 44 One Day Internationals, and appeared in 2 World Cups.Inside the dressing room, and out on the pitch, Derek witnessed at first hand an era of English cricket populated by characters such as Botham, Gooch, Lamb, and Gower. An era so far removed from today's rather anodyne sporting environment. And it wasn't just at international level that the sport lived life to the full. He was an integral part of Essex's all conquering side that won the County Championship 6 times as well as numerous one day trophies. Full of insight and experience here is the story of one of English cricket's most tumultuous periods told by someone who was there.

But I know better than to expect anyone to believe me.'In 2015, former England football star Rio Ferdinand suddenly and tragically lost his wife and soulmate Rebecca, aged 34, to cancer. It was a profound shock and Rio found himself struggling to cope not just with the pain of his grief, but also with his new role as both mum and dad to their three young children. His book now shares the story of meeting, marrying and losing Rebecca, his own and the family's grief - as well as the advice and support that get him through each day as they strive to piece themselves back together. Thinking Out Loud is written in the hope that he can inspire others struggling with loss and grief to find the help they need through this most difficult of times.

Gunning for Greatness: My Life

Mesut Özil
Authors:
Mesut Özil

Mesut Ozil is a midfield magician, casting an elegant spell over opponents and conjuring passes through gaps lesser mortals can't even see. After an eventful sojourn among the Galacticos of Real Madrid he has savoured silverware at Arsenal, while in 2014 he lifted the World Cup with Germany. But his life and career have been a test of resilience. Growing up in Germany's Turkish community, he faced prejudice from those who claimed his dual identity would prevent him giving his all for the national team. Later came questions over a different type of commitment, the kind levelled against those, like Mesut Ozil, who excel in football's finer arts rather than relying simply on running and ruggedness. He has proved concerns on both these issues lack substance. In Gunning for Greatness, Mesut Ozil reveals the inside stories of his relationships with Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, his quest to help the under-fire Frenchman restore Arsenal's pre-eminence - and how he silenced the sceptics by conquering the world.

Dare to Do

Sarah Outen
Authors:
Sarah Outen

On 1 April 2011, rower and adventurer Sarah Outen set off in her kayak from Tower Bridge for France. Her aim was simple: to circle the globe entirely under her own steam - cycling, kayaking and rowing across Europe, Asia, the Pacific, the Americas, the Atlantic and eventually home. A year later, Sarah was plucked from the Pacific ocean amid tropical storm Mawar, her boat broken, her spirit even more so. But that wasn't the end. Despite ill health and depression, giving up was not an option. So Sarah set off once more to finish what she had started, becoming the first woman to row solo from Japan to Alaska, as well as the first woman to row the Pacific from West to East. She kayaked the treacherous Aleutian chain and cycled the Americas, before setting sail on the Atlantic, despite the risk of another row-ending storm...Dare to Do is more than an adventure story. It is a story of the kindness of strangers and the spirit of travel; a story of the raw power of nature, of finding love in unexpected places, and of discovering your inner strength. It is about trying and failing, and trying again, and about how, even when all seems lost, you can find yourself.

The Mauler

Alexander Gustafsson
Authors:
Alexander Gustafsson

As told to Leif Eriksson and Martin Svensson.Alexander Gustafsson grew up in Arboga, a small town in Sweden. A country boy, he started boxing when he was 10 - winning the national youth medal at the age of 16. After a handful of run-ins with the law he began practicing mixed martial arts and working his way up the ranks of the UFC. Nicknamed The Mauler by his training partners, due to his power, killer instinct and somewhat recklessness whilst fighting; this is the story of Gustafssons struggle to succeed in one of the world's most challenging sports. Family, friends, and the Christian faith all play decisive rolls. But above all, it's Alexander's unique talent for martial arts which, in just a few short years, sees him become one of the UFC's main poster boys. The Mauler is a frank and at times painful account of a young man rapidly heading off the rails, and of his fight to reach the top of his game in an effort to change his life forever.
