He is a Red - humankind's lowest caste. But he has something the Golds - the ruthless ruling class - will never understand.

He has a wife he worships, a family who give him strength. He has love.

And when they take that from him, all that remains is revenge . . .

It has hints of Harry Potter and Hunger Games, but it is its own animal. And it is not YA. The writing is excellent and the story is better. This is one terrific fantasy book, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. — Terry Brooks
With all of the tension of The Hunger Games and heady dose of savagery that lives somewhere in the space between The Lord of the Flies and ancient Greek mythology that revels in the violent deeds of the deities of old, RED RISING is compulsively readable and exceedingly entertaining. The blend of familiar and unfailingly effective machinations that clash with the stark new reality Brown has created make this tale a must for both fans of classic sci-fi and fervent followers of new school dystopian epics. — http://fantasyreviewbarn.com/dystopia-review-red-rising-by-pierce-brown/
RED RISING wouldn't exist without the countless classics it takes its cues from, but this great debut builds a formidable fortress upon their familiar foundations, making such interesting alterations along the way that its piecemeal parts are essentially rendered unrecognisable. Like mankind has in the past, Pierce Brown reaches for the stars, and mostly hits that monumental mark. — http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/01/book-review-red-rising-pierce-brown
The heart-stopping excitement of the Hunger Games meets the pulse-pounding majesty and complexity of Game of Thrones, all wrapped up in the visionary beauty and melancholy of Blade Runner... A shot of adrenalin for your imagination. — Star Magazine

They leave us no choice.Always look both ways before you cross the road. Get a 9 to 5 job . Exercise for 30 minutes every day. Do not eat bread. Do not eat sugar. Do yoga. Do meditate. Never raise your voice. Always smile, even if you feel like dying. What are you doing to help yourself? What are you doing to show that you're worth the resources? Some time in the near future, thanks to medical technology HealthTechTM, immortality is now within humanity's grasp. But faced with declining economic productivity, falling birth rates and a severely aging population, the Ministry has become the all-powerful arbiter of how healthcare resources are allocated. Resources accrue to 'lifers', those predisposed for a life expected to be lived healthily well beyond a hundred years old. Some factors that determine lifer status are genetically incidental - but there are other, more intangible factors that are within individuals' control: the degree to which they are 'life-loving' and self-caring. Non-lifers are known as 'sub-100s': individuals with no potential for longevity and deemed a waste of HealthTechTM resources. The Suicide Club hasn't always been an activist group. Initially, it was a group of disillusioned lifers, gathering to indulge in forbidden, hedonistic activities: performances of live music, traditional meals of the most artery-clogging kind, irresponsible orgies . . . You name it. Now branded terrorists, anyone found guilty of wanting the right to die as they choose will find themselves fast-tracked to the Third Wave and condemned to immortality. . .

Elevation

Stephen King
Authors:
Stephen King

Castle Rock is a small town, where word gets around quickly. That's why Scott Carey wants to confide only in his friend Doctor Bob Ellis about his strange condition: he's losing weight, without getting thinner, and the scales register the same when he is in his clothes or out of them, however heavy they are. Scott also has new neighbours, who have opened a 'fine dining experience' in town, although it's an experience being shunned by the locals; Deidre McComb and her wife Missy Donaldson don't exactly fit in with the community's expectations. And now Scott seems trapped in a feud with the couple over their dogs dropping their business on his lawn. Missy may be friendly, but Deidre is cold as ice.As the town prepares for its annual Thanksgiving 12k run, Scott starts to understand the prejudices his neighbours face and he tries to help. Unlikely alliances form and the mystery of Scott's affliction brings out the best in people who have indulged the worst in themselves and others. From master storyteller Stephen King, our 'most precious renewable resource, like Shakespeare in the malleability of his work' (Guardian), comes this timely, upbeat tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences. Compelling and eerie, Elevation is as gloriously joyful (with a twinge of deep sadness) as 'It's a Wonderful Life.'

How it Happened

Michael Koryta
Authors:
Michael Koryta

"And that is how it happened. Can we stop now?"Kimberly Crepeaux is no good, a notorious jailhouse snitch, teen mother, and heroin addict whose petty crimes are well-known to the rural Maine community where she lives. So when she confesses to her role in the brutal murders of Jackie Pelletier and Ian Kelly, the daughter of a well-known local family and her sweetheart, the locals have little reason to believe her story. Not Rob Barrett, the FBI investigator and interrogator specializing in telling a true confession from a falsehood. He's been circling Kimberly and her conspirators for months, waiting for the right avenue to the truth, and has finally found it. He knows, as strongly as he's known anything, that Kimberly's story-a grisly, harrowing story of a hit and run fueled by dope and cheap beer that becomes a brutal stabbing in cold blood-is how it happened. But one thing remains elusive: where are Jackie and Ian's bodies? After Barrett stakes his name and reputation on the truth of Kimberly's confession, only to have the bodies turn up 200 miles from where she said they'd be, shot in the back and covered in a third person's DNA, the case is quickly closed and Barrett forcibly reassigned. But something still nags at locals, and at a local newspaper reporter who's been chasing the story as doggedly as Barrett himself.Reminiscent of both the epic and adventurous early writing of Stephen King and the white-knuckled action of Lee Child (both of whom have anointed Koryta as the next great thriller writer), HOW IT HAPPENED is a frightening, tension-filled ride into the dark heart of rural America.
