Northern Ireland, 1990s.Exhausted from years of futile war, the British government and the IRA leadership have been seeking a route towards peace with honour. But for those on the ground, the conflict is very much alive. And if the years of savage violence are leading to smiles and handshakes, soldiers on both sides start to question what exactly they have been fighting for all these years. When a senior IRA man's wife turns informer, her husband and his brother gather their old comrades for an assault on the army base where she's being held. But personal grudges rise to the surface, and when their most lethal assassin suddenly refuses to fight, it provokes a crisis among the Irish Republicans, which threatens the fragile peace talks underway. Seeing a weakness, British military Special Forces seize the opportunity to crush this notorious terrorist cell before a final ceasefire is agreed.Taking its themes and structure from Homer's Iliad, this powerful new Irish novel explores the brutal glory of armed conflict, and the bitter sacrifice of those offering their lives to defend the honour of politicians who never risk a drop of their own blood.
