TWO ROADS ACQUIRES GREAT HOSTESSES BY SIÂN EVANS
16 Apr 2015
Two Roads, an imprint of John Murray Press, is delighted to announce the acquisition of GREAT HOSTESSES by Siân Evans, an exploration of six extraordinary and influential women who helped shape the arts, politics and society during the interwar years. Their names are legendary: Lady Londonderry, Lady Nancy Astor, Lady Emerald Cunard, Lady Sybil Colefax, Dame Margaret Greville and Mrs Laura Corrigan. Competitive, ruthless and fascinating, these women collected the great and the good of the age from maharajahs to agents of foreign powers who all formed a fascinating, kaleidoscopic spectacle of celebrity, talent and burning ambition, revolving like satellites around the great hostesses.
Siân Evans is a prolific author, journalist, commentator, speaker, publicist and film consultant specialising in social history. She is the author of Mrs Ronnie and Life Below Stairs in the Victorian Country House.
Siân Evans said: “I am thrilled at this commission, and it will be great to work with Lisa Highton and Two Roads on this wonderful project. This book provides a terrific and timely opportunity to reassess the interlinked lives of the ‘Big Six’ Society hostesses, three of whom were British and three American. Traditionally overlooked by historians, each woman played a unique role during a complex era, courting and collecting princes and politicians, royals and radicals, dilettantes and dictators.”
Highton acquired UK rights from Diane Banks at Diane Banks Associates for publication in 2016.
