About us

The home of notable books

Welcome to Nicholas Brealey Publishing, the home of notable books. Nicholas Brealey Publishing was eponymously founded way back in 1992 to publish a select list of enduring and forward thinking books focusing on big ideas and practical wisdom - alongside original voices in narrative non-fiction, notably in Travel and Adventure writing. This eclectic, curated approach to vigorously publishing only what’s new, special and well worth reading proved successful across the world and is very much our continued focus. As well as continuing to publish distinctive and exciting titles, we boast perennial bestsellers that are mainstays of their genre. The company has an award-winning list of books on coaching and leadership, personal development and popular psychology, smart thinking and the ‘big ideas’ in business and economics. We are home to some notable books, including the topical The Trouble with Europe, the bestselling The 80/20 Principle trilogy by Richard Koch, and the 50 Classics Series by Tom Butler-Bowdon on ‘the literature of possibility’. Our authors are some of the leading voices in their fields, including award-winning economist Roger Bootle, organizational development experts Peter Senge and Arie de Geus, and in psychology such internationally renowned renowned authors as Richard Nisbett, Gary Klein and Martin Seligman. With offices in London and Boston, our list has expanded and developed over more than two decades of international publishing. From our roots as a publisher of global business books including Richard Lewis’ When Cultures Collide and Fons Trompenaars’ Riding the Waves of Culture, we went on to acquire Intercultural Press in the US and an outstanding list of cross-cultural titles. We publish the world’s bestselling list of Coaching books, starting with Sir John Whitmore’s Coaching for Performance which has sold a million copies worldwide over its four editions, and then the leading US guide Co-Active Coaching with the acquisition of Davies-Black some years later, also expanding our list of books on leadership, human resources, career development and personality type (including the classic Gifts Differing.) We are proud to publish a world-class list of travel writing titles, including FT Book of the Year Swiss Watching, 2015 Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year finalist Walking the Woods and the Water, and the ever-popular Around India in 80 Trains. Swiss Watching and the recent Why the Dutch are Different are two of a growing number of titles on our list that paint a contemporary portrait of a people, its country and its culture. Now in its 24th year, Nicholas Brealey Publishing joined Hachette UK in June 2015 as part of John Murray Press. With The Gilded Chalet forthcoming this winter and looking forward to Spring 2016 highlights The Greats on Leadership and Dare to Do, Sarah Outen’s riveting account of her 30,000 mile, five-year loop of the planet by pedal and paddle, we are confident that this next chapter will be one of the most successful yet.

SuperHubs

By Sandra Navidi, Nouriel Roubini

FOREWORD BY NOURIEL ROUBINI

SuperHubs is a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the global financial system and the powerful personal networks through which it is run, at the centre of which sit the Elites - the SuperHubs.

Combining an insider's knowledge with principles of network science, Sandra Navidi offers a startling new perspective on how the financial system really operates.

SuperHubs reveals what happens at the exclusive, invitation-only platforms - The World Economic Forum in Davos, the meetings of the International Monetary Fund, think-tank gatherings, power lunches, charity events, and private parties. This is the most vivid portrait to date of the global elite: the bank CEOs, fund managers, billionaire financiers and politicians who, through their interlocking relationships and collective influence are transforming the future of our financial system and, for better or worse, shaping our world.

In SuperHubs, Ms. Navidi skillfully applies network science to the global financial system and the human networks that underpin it. SuperHubs is a topical and relevant book that should be read by anyone seeking a fresh perspective on the human endeavor that is our financial system.Exceedingly illuminating professional and personal insights into the global financial system. Highly recommendable reading.SuperHubs-what a clever concept! Sandra Navidi impresses with a masterful piece of both reporting and analysis.Sandra Navidi provides an entertaining and absorbing portrayal of the networks used by many of the top executives in finance. She draws many useful conclusions and provides terrific portraits of some of the major players in finance today. An intimate glimpse into the obscure world of high finance ... [that] should be voraciously consumed by anyone in business. How are we governed? By whom and how? These are the classical questions which globalization and financial markets have given a new urgency. This book provides a front row seat in the theater of fundamental change.SuperHubs is an analytical, engaging and insightful guide. It is a must read for all who are striving for growth and excellence!Sandra Navidi's book $uperHubs is beautifully and effectively done. Not only is it a fascinating description of the power wielded by elite networks over the financial sector, it is also a meditation on the consequences of this system for the economy and the society. In recent times, we have seen extraordinary ruptures - notably Britain's vote to break away from the European Union and the intensified sense of exclusion felt by much of America's working class. The last chapter of $uperHubs proposes that this ruling system's "monoculture," its isolation from the rest of society, and its seeming unawareness of the fragility of what it has built are largely responsible for these ruptures, and that the system may lead to a major crisis in the future.SuperHubs offers new insight into those with the power to change the world.Navidi shows how networks ... are crucial. Her writing blends personal anecdote and wry observation with a sound grasp of the science of complex self-organizing systems, making SuperHubs a uniquely intelligent and engaging insight into financial power.A colorful picture of our financial world and the tremendously powerful titans who are in charge of it. A fun and very useful book!SuperHubs offers a balanced analysis of the system's driving forces and raises controversial issues regarding the far-reaching impact of a few all-powerful individuals, addressing the fundamental aspects of the complex human dynamics ruling finance and the world. A spirited and riveting book that makes for an intriguing read. This book is unique in describing and analyzing the human behavior in the upper circles of the global financial system. I agree with the author that unethical behavior has aggravated the increasing wealth gap and social stratification, and thus has fundamentally shaken society's trust in our financial system. The need for political action to save banks in the crisis of 2008, made clear that the financial system is a not just a private sector but also a common good. It is this orientation on the common good and the wellbeing of ordinary people that has to be included in capitalism at large and the financial sector in particular. This book will empower readers to advocate for change. An expert tour guide, Ms. Navidi helps us understand the mechanisms that drive our global financial system by ultimately telling a human story of how a select few wield incredible financial and political power. SuperHubs is a substantive book with just the right balance of research and stories to make it an entertaining and satisfying read.SuperHubs is dedicated to a vitally important topic: the state of our financial system and its implications for society. If you want to understand how our world works this book is for you.Navidi will be remembered as the woman who revealed how the 1% maintain their plutocracy.Readers will recognize how the relations of those who pull the levers of global power are the bonds of influence that shape the world.SuperHubs deftly takes the reader through the global and societal consequences of those people's relationships, power and money.SuperHubs is indispensable for readers who want to understand the financial world's dynamics. Her fascinating insider's perspective reveals complex linkages among the financial elite and the resulting far-reaching consequences. SuperHubs is a blockbuster! We will see how financial oligarchs have instrumentalized most governments to realize their interests. We are very far away from reform. SuperHubs demonstrates, how far off.SuperHubs vividly describes how homogeneous alpha males maximize their opportunities. Readers will wish that this type of financial elite will disappear, or at the very least, include more women. An absorbing portrayal of the financial elite's self-perpetuating power structures. SuperHubs is a definite "buy"!Navidi has thoughtfully determined that a few powerful people rule the world with their extensive networks. May SuperHubs inspire them to make it a more humane and peaceful place.Navidi describes vividly and without taboos how the financial elite have created their own cosmos and why it is about time to scrutinize the rules upon which this system is based. An intimate glimpse into the world of the financial elite and their unique network of personal relationshipsMs. Navidi is the Founder and CEO of BeyondGlobal, a consulting firm, where she renders macroeconomic and strategic positioning advice. Previously, Ms. Navidi worked closely with economist Nouriel Roubini as Director of Research Strategies and Senior Relationship Manager at Roubini Global Economics. Prior to that she had positions as investment banker at Scarsdale Equities, general counsel at Muzinich & Co. and consultant at Deloitte. Ms. Navidi holds a law degree from the University of Cologne School of Law, Germany, and a Master-of-Law Degree in Banking Corporate and Finance law from Fordham University School of Law, USA. She is admitted to practice law in the Federal Republic of Germany as well as in the State of New York. As an expert commentator on financial markets, Ms. Navidi has given over 600 interviews on international media outlets and has keynoted at dozens of large industry events.

In a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how the world's most powerful titans pull the levers of our global financial system, Sandra Navidi offers a startling new perspective on how these 'superhubs' build their powerful networks and how their decisions impact all our lives.

Learn what happens at the exclusive, invitation-only platforms - The World Economic Forum in Davos, the meetings of the International Monetary Fund, think-tank gatherings, and galas. This is the most vivid portrait to date of the global elite: the bank CEOs, fund managers, billionaire financiers, and politicians who, through their interlocking relationships and collective influence transform our increasingly fragile financial system, economy and society, resulting in a worldwide backlash.

'In $uperHubs, Ms. Navidi skillfully applies network science to the global financial system and the human networks that underpin it. $uperHubs is a topical and relevant book that should be read by anyone seeking a fresh perspective on the human endeavor that is our financial system.' PROFESSOR LAWRENCE H. SUMMERS, Harvard; former US Secretary of the Treasury

'Sandra Navidi's book $uperHubs is not only a fascinating description of the power wielded by elite networks over the financial sector. It is also a meditation on the consequences of this system for the economy and the society. ... $uperHubs suggests that this ruling system's 'monoculture', its isolation from the rest of society, and its seeming unawareness of the fragility of what it has built are largely responsible for these ruptures.' PROFESSOR EDMUND S. PHELPS, Columbia University, 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics

'$uperHubs is a book written with great style, but it also contains a lot of important substance. Navidi sees the global economy as a complex, adaptive system, and situates the financial system at the very core of this economy where a concentrated number of real human beings - the 'superhubs' - exercise an unrecognized degree of economic and political power, threatening the future stability of the economy and even our democratic political systems. By identifying these systemic problems, Navidi brings us one step closer to appropriate solutions. A 'must read', and a pleasure to do so.' WILLIAM R. WHITE, Chairman of the Economic and Development Review Committee (EDRC) at the OECD

'Exceedingly illuminating professional and personal insights into the global financial system. Highly recommendable reading.' PROFESSOR JÃœRGEN STARK, former member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank

Revolutionary Ride

By Lois Pryce

In 2011, at the height of tension between the British and Iranian governments, travel writer Lois Pryce found a note left on her motorcycle outside the Iranian Embassy in London:

... I wish that you will visit Iran so you will see for yourself about my country. WE ARE NOT TERRORISTS!!! Please come to my city, Shiraz. It is very famous as the friendliest city in Iran, it is the city of poetry and gardens and wine!!!
Your Persian friend,
Habib

Intrigued, Lois decides to ignore the official warnings against travel (and the warnings of her friends and family) and sets off alone on a 3,000 mile ride from Tabriz to Shiraz, to try to uncover the heart of this most complex and incongruous country. Along the way, she meets carpet sellers and drug addicts, war veterans and housewives, doctors and teachers - people living ordinary lives under the rule of an extraordinarily strict Islamic government.

Revolutionary Ride is the story of a people and a country. Religious and hedonistic, practical and poetic, modern and rooted in tradition - and with a wild sense of humour and appreciation of beauty despite the comparative lack of freedom - this is real contemporary Iran.

Within a few pages I'd recognised a kindred spirit. Tourist-free solo travelling, lo-fi equipment including real maps instead of gadgets, a satisfying blend of action, thought and feeling, well-timed references to or quotes from one of my own heroines since I was a teenager. That central theme - the distinction between government and people - is not easy to maintain but it seemed to me Lois hit the right note every time. This is a proper travelogue - a joyful, moving and stereotype-busting tale.An excellent, fascinating read.Pryce writes as she acts, with an easy ebullience, and this makes interesting things happen to her. Revolutionary Ride is likeable because she admits her ignorance and follows her nose.If you still need to know why the motorcycle is a magical device for revealing the truth about this wonderful, endangered world, read Lois Pryce's sometimes frightening, sometimes hilarious, always warm-hearted testament. That will do it for you. Thank you Lois, so much.Lois Pryce writes with all the exuberance and verve with which she dons her helmet and takes to the road.Lois Pryce's motorbike takes her into corners of modern Iranian life that are full of the unexpected. The story of an epic journey that takes the myths and unravels them first hand.Long before the relaunch of BA's Tehran flights signalled a thumbsup to travel, Lois Pryce was gadding about the country on a motorbike.

PRAISE FOR LOIS PRYCE:

Breezy and upbeat... it's enough to make readers reach for their helmets and aim for a remote part of the globe.

Full of funny asides and snappy accounts.A gutsy tale of one woman and her bike, told with vigour and honesty.Fearless.This is a proper travelogue - a joyful, moving and stereotype-busting tale.An excellent, fascinating read. The story of an epic journey that takes the myths and unravels them first hand.Adventurer Lois Pryce ignores all warnings and embarks on a 3,000- mile journey across Iran, lifting the veil on a misunderstood country

Why the Dutch are Different

By Ben Coates

*A SCOTSMAN TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR*

Stranded at Schiphol airport, Ben Coates called up a friendly Dutch girl he'd met some months earlier. He stayed for dinner. Actually, he stayed for good.

In the first book to consider the hidden heart and history of the Netherlands from a modern perspective, the author explores the length and breadth of his adopted homeland and discovers why one of the world's smallest countries is also so significant and so fascinating. It is a self-made country, the Dutch national character shaped by the ongoing battle to keep the water out from the love of dairy and beer to the attitude to nature and the famous tolerance.

Ben Coates investigates what makes the Dutch the Dutch, why the Netherlands is much more than Holland and why the colour orange is so important. Along the way he reveals why they are the world's tallest people and have the best carnival outside Brazil. He learns why Amsterdam's brothels are going out of business, who really killed Anne Frank, and how the Dutch manage to be richer than almost everyone else despite working far less. He also discovers a country which is changing fast, with the Dutch now questioning many of the liberal policies which made their nation famous.

A personal portrait of a fascinating people, a sideways history and an entertaining travelogue, Why the Dutch are Different is the story of an Englishman who went Dutch. And loved it.

The Art of Doing Business Across Cultures

By Craig Storti

In 50 short, simple conversations, speakers from two different cultures misinterpret each other, with serious consequences for the bottom line and ongoing business relations.

The Art of Doing Business Across Cultures presents five brief (8-10 lines), unsuccessful conversational exchanges between Americans and their business colleagues in 10 different locations-the Arab Middle East, Brazil, China, England, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, and Russia. These situations illustrate the five most common cultural differences between Americans (and other northern Europeans) and each of the featured cultures through debriefing each conversation to illustrate where the cultural mistake occurred, and suggesting a practical fix to prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.

The Art of Doing Business Across Cultures is a quick tour of the most common cultural differences Americans/No. Europeans encounter when doing business in ten of the world's key markets.

The Culture Solution

By Deirdre Mendez

In today's global business reality, the ability to work across cultures is key to teamwork and productivity.

The Culture Solution is the book to provide businesspeople a step-by-step system to manage and recognize for themselves the cultural factors that affect international relationships and global partnerships.

Using the new method of Cultural Analysis created by Deirdre Mendez, international managers can solve problems and create cultural synergies that produce the most productive international teams, projects and alliances.

The Business persons toolkit to get from zero to global

The Culture Solution offers a practical system that applies straightforward principles to real-life situations in international business, travel, project and team management, conflict resolution, mediation and more. Through a powerful, practical framework (The ARC System) readers will be able to discern the cultural orientation of the people they're interacting with, no matter where they are from, and understand behavior and expectations in any environment.

'The topics discussed in this book are a must-read for anybody who needs to accomplish an international mission. This book takes you quickly from understanding to strategy' Karl Wimmer, PhD, Director, Design Enablement, GlobalFoundries

'In addition to the utility of the approach, this is a fun read, enlightening and even self-illuminating' Raymond J. Brimble, CEO Lynxs Group

'I highly recommend this book to anyone considering an assignment overseas' Terry B. Kahler, Vice President, Dell, Inc.

'I will use The Culture Solution as a key resource in my own work with students, managers and executives.' Andy Molinsky, PhD, author of Global Dexterity: How to Adapt Your Behavior Without Losing Yourself in the Process

'I thoroughly recommend The Culture Solution as a resource for anyone who wishes to execute tactful, culturally-appropriate communication that fosters strong business connections' Sharon Schweitzer, JD, author of Access to Asia

'As a practitioner, I appreciate the fact that The Culture Solution is based on analysis of people's actual behavior and not on aggregated country profiles. The result is specific and tailored coaching - much more useful to clients than generalizations associated with national norms' Betsy Neidel, Managing Director, Blue Heron Holdings, LLC

Dare to Do

By Sarah Outen

SHORTLISTED FOR THE EDWARD STANFORD ADVENTURE TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD

On 1 April 2011, rower and adventurer Sarah Outen set off in her kayak from Tower Bridge for France. Her aim was simple: to circle the globe entirely under her own steam - cycling, kayaking and rowing across Europe, Asia, the Pacific, North America, the Atlantic and eventually home. A year later, Sarah was plucked from the Pacific ocean amid tropical storm Mawar, her boat broken, her spirit even more so.

But that wasn't the end. Despite ill health and depression, giving up was not an option. So Sarah set off once more to finish what she had started, becoming the first woman to row solo from Japan to Alaska, as well as the first woman to row the mid-Pacific from West to East. She kayaked the treacherous Aleutian chain and cycled North America, before setting out on the Atlantic, despite the risk of another row-ending storm...

Dare to Do is more than an adventure story. It is a story of the kindness of strangers and the spirit of travel; a story of the raw power of nature, of finding love in unexpected places, and of discovering your inner strength. It is about trying and failing, and trying again, and about how, even when all seems lost, you can find yourself.

Sarah is an honest, open, courageous and inspiring person... and has a contagious love for life. I can't wait for her book.Outen's story is remarkable.Sarah has self-reliance and belief in quantities I haven't come across in anyone else. She is a wonderful and nutty individual with a powerful story to tell.Definitely mad. Definitely marvellous. A seriously tough expedition. The story of Outen's indomitable pursuit of her objective to its conclusion, written with breathtaking matter of factness. An epic feat. There is only one Sarah Outen. A unique blend of powerful female athlete and silly friend. Her natural charisma, talent for storytelling and unrivalled persistence sets Sarah Outen apart. She is the top female adventurer of the 21st Century - nobody else comes close.Sarah has raised the bar of adventure travel with genuinely ground-breaking triumphs. And it has been her willingness to share the inner journey, the doubts, fears, and frustrations, that has truly set her apart. That's the way to do adventure.A gripping adventure story that is rare in its courage and rarer still in the way it feels fresh and contemporary.Sarah Outen prefaces her epic trip around the world under her own steam with a fabulous sentence: "The years ahead became some of the most vivid, treasured and, at times, the most difficult of my life. But all I knew is all we ever know - that I knew nothing about how the story would unfold." Who could fail to read on? Dare to Do chronicles a journey many readers will have mulled over at various points, but Outen had the courage to tackle it.Like Wild - only Wilder. An intimate glimpse into the raw excitement, fears, and determination which could provoke someone like Outen to spend years circumnavigating the globe, in a number of imaginative and uncomfortable ways. Outen is honest and relatable, while her depictions of places and people she meets are undeniably engaging. [Dare to Do is] fast-paced and good-humoured.Dare to Do gives a deeper insight into what it really takes to be an 'adventurer.' By pushing her boundaries so far, Sarah shows us what could be possible in our own lives. Whatever you want to dare to do, you can find inspiration from Sarah's story. This is much more than a tale of a journey round our planet. This is Sarah's story of being able to dig deep when it feels like everything is against you.Excellent... Extraordinary... Inspirational. The story of Sarah Outen's five-year 25,000 mile journey looping the planet by cycling across Europe, Asia, and North America, and canoeing and kayaking across the North Pacific and North Atlantic. This is her adventure and inner journey, and also a call to action, to redefine your own boundaries, to be courageous, and to dare to do.

Sarah Outen is a British adventurer, motivational speaker and author. In November 2015 Sarah completed her London2London: Via the World expedition, which saw her attempt to kayak, cycle and row 25,000 miles around the Northern Hemisphere. The journey took 4.5 years and was all the richer for not turning out exactly as had been planned.

The Timbuktu School for Nomads

By Nicholas Jubber

The Sahara: a dream-like, far away landscape of Lawrence of Arabia and Wilfred Thesiger, The English Patient and Star Wars, and home to nomadic communities whose ways of life stretch back millennia. Today it's a teeth-janglingly dangerous destination, where the threat of jihadists lurks just over the horizon. Following in the footsteps of 16th century traveller Leo Africanus, Nicholas Jubber went on a turbulent adventure to the forgotten places of North Africa and the legendary Timbuktu.

Once the seat of African civilization and home to the richest man who ever lived, this mythic city is now scarred by terrorist occupation and is so remote its own inhabitants hail you with the greeting, 'Welcome to the middle of nowhere'.

From the cattle markets of the Atlas, across the Western Sahara and up the Niger river, Nicholas joins the camps of the Tuareg, Fulani, Berbers, and other communities, to learn about their craft, their values and their place in the world.

The Timbuktu School for Nomads is a unique look at a resilient city and how the nomads pit ancient ways of life against the challenges of the 21st century.

[A] passionate paean to the Sahara. The risk-taking Mr Jubber enters the desert-scape of North Africa. An education.Insightful, warm and humorousAn abundantly energetic gold-mine of a book. Heaped with history and background information, with ideas, adventures, and poignant postulations, it stares right in the face of current events. This is a book that will remind us all to look with care at what is happening on the great sandscape of North Africa now. A work of inspiration and scholarship.Sedentary civilization has been telling itself that nomads are an anachronism for many centuries. But nomadic cultures are still vibrantly alive, as the intrepid Nick Jubber shows us in North Africa. This book is both a wonderful travel adventure, and a defense of journeys without end.A well-informed and readable book based on time spent in nomad camps and a thorough survey of the literature. The Sahara and Sahel are complex, dangerous, productive, compelling places. The Timbuktu School for Nomads captures the feel of this in conversations with nomads about their livelihoods, with the constant threat of a drought or an al Qaeda squadron just over the next dune. The Timbuktu School for Nomads takes us on an unforgettable journey through time and space, plenty of it, and gives voice to voiceless communities that inhabit one of the most problematic corners of the globe*PRAISE FOR NICHOLAS JUBBER* Passionate, exuberant and charming.Engaging.
