Lifeshocks

And how to love them

By Sophie Sabbage

  • Paperback
  • £9.99

The second book from the author of the bestselling The Cancer Whisperer.

'There are moments in time when our internal perceptions are confronted by external events, when what is assumed, wished or imagined collides with what is...'

Sophie Sabbage, author of The Cancer Whisperer, has written this book to show that we can choose how we respond to these Lifeshocks.

She shows lifeshocks knock on the doors of our pretences and invite us to walk authentically through the world, and that if we recognize this, we can respond to them creatively. Beginning with examples of lifeshocks from her own life and from the lives of people she has mentored, Sophie show shows how bad things shape our lives, starting from an early age, and how we tend to react to them in a way that diminish our lives. But she also shows how we can react to them in a way that helps us find our true purpose in life, explaining the different types of lifeshocks, the gifts those different types bring with them and how to access those gifts quickly.

Lifeshocks is a book that can completely transform your life so that your become full of gratitude for it.

Morality

Jonathan Sacks
Authors:
Jonathan Sacks

Tie-in to his Radio 4 series, thought leader Jonathan Sacks on how we can build a strong collective morality for the modern era.In today's world of cultural climate change, argues Jonathan Sacks, we have outsourced morality to the markets on the one hand, and to government on the other. If the market rewards it, it must be OK - unless the law says not to.Yet while the markets have brought wealth to many and the state has done much to contain the worst excesses of inequality, neither is capable of bearing the moral weight of showing us how to live.On the one hand, traditional values no longer hold, yet recent political swings show that modern ideals of tolerance have left many feeling rudderless and adrift. In this environment we see things fall apart in unexpected ways - toxic public discourse that makes true societal progress almost unattainable; the rise of religious extremism on the one hand and of aggressive atheism on the other; a drive for respect of all that establishes 'safe space' only where true debate is off limits. How can we build - or rebuild - a collective culture that is able to both respect difference and draw us together to work for the common good? Talking to key modern influences and thinkers, and drawing inspiration from the Bible and the historical experience of the Jewish people, Sacks argues that there are eight key factors in establishing, maintaining and passing on resilient moral values within a broad group, among them attitudes of lifelong learning and of thanksgiving, the importance of family life and community, and a culture of positive argument in place of destructive conflict.Combining his passionate belief in a positive way forward with a careful weighing of the realities and challenges of the position in which we find ourselves, Jonathan Sacks sets out a clear picture of a world in which we can all find our place and build a future worth working for.(P)2018 Hodder & Stoughton Limited

Anxiety is Your Superpower

Wendy Suzuki
Authors:
Wendy Suzuki

We live in an age of anxiety. Like an omnipresent yet invisible odour you've grown used to, anxiety has become a constant condition, a fact of life, and a distraction that undermines our quality of life. Dr Wendy Suzuki's ground-breaking research will show us that science tells us a very different story: yes, anxiety is unpleasant - it's meant to be - and in the debilitating extreme, what Wendy will call 'bad anxiety', it's destructive. But most of the anxiety that humans feel is essential - not only to survival, but for higher brain functions formerly thought to be put on hold during anxious moments, Wendy will provide two broad categories of neuroscience-based hacks for harnessing anxiety and facing it head-on. The first will help address and calm anxiety so that you can enjoy the productivity you will experience, and the second grouping of brain science hacks will enable readers to channel anxious feelings into six uses for good anxiety - from productivity, increased emotional intelligence and focus to creativity and confidence. Through Wendy's unique perspective as a neuroscientist, she will teach us how to flip anxiety on its head and offer a counterintuitive lens through which to understand how anxiety manifests in our everyday lives. The book will introduce a taboo breaking slant on anxiety: we will learn how it can be good for us and that once we learn how to play it at its own game, it can become our superpower!

Anyway

Kent M Keith
Authors:
Kent M Keith

People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centred. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish motives. Do good anyway. These commandments were first written down by Kent M. Keith for student leaders in the 1960s. Over the following years, they spread via word-of-mouth and became greatly valued - adopted by people far and wide. Now, for the first time, Keith's inspiring commandments appear in this life-changing book, with each principle illustrated with inspiring stories from his own life, as well as classic examples from history. They offer a way of living far removed from the lifestyle that strives for the popular symbols of success: wealth, power and fame. Instead, these ten rational principles focus on the enriching personal meaning that comes through living our lives selflessly and without recognition. Through accepting the Paradoxical Commandments and the paradoxical life, we are each truly free to be who we are really meant to be.
