Deep Magic, Dragons and Talking Mice

How Reading C.S. Lewis Can Change Your Life

By Alister McGrath

  • Paperback
  • £9.99

What if you could ask C.S. Lewis his thoughts on the questions we all ask ourselves from time to time - questions about friendship, education, suffering, God... and the meaning of life itself?

What if you could ask C. S. Lewis his thoughts on the questions we all ask ourselves from time to time - questions about friendship, education, suffering, God ... and the meaning of life itself?

Alister McGrath's provocative and perceptive book Deep Magic, Dragons and Talking Mice takes Lewis as the perfect conversation companion for the persistent meaning-of-life questions everyone asks. Lewis travelled from staunch atheism to reluctant belief, from rational scepticism to the appreciation of human desires and imagination, and from Christian apologist during the Second World War to celebrated author of classic children's literature - and as such looked at life's mysteries from many different viewpoints. The questions Lewis thought so deeply about are still relevant today, and all are illuminated by his astonishingly varied body of work.

Whether you're new to Lewis, a fan of the Narnia books or a devotee of his apologetic writings, McGrath will lead you into an exploration of life's deepest questions, using one of the twentieth century's most engaging writers as our guide.

Biographical Notes

Alister McGrath is the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University, and Fellow of Harris Manchester College, Oxford. After initial academic work in the natural sciences, Alister turned to the study of theology and intellectual history, while occasionally becoming engaged in broader cultural debates about the rationality and relevance of the Christian faith. He is the author of many academic and theological works, as well as the bestselling The Dawkins Delusion and, most recently, his acclaimed C. S. Lewis - A Life.

This is a splendid book which reminds us of the whole body of thought revealed through Lewis' writing. It may help us see in a new light some of the things we have already read. It may send us back to read again, or for the first time, some of the spiritual classics that other works of C S Lewis have become. McGrath's claim that reading C S Lewis can change your life is no vain boast. Reading McGrath on Lewis could be a similarly momentous act in our journeys of life and faith. — The Methodist Recorder
If McGrath's purpose is to inspire his own readers to delve into Lewis's writings, he certainly achieves that. Highly readable.' — Reflections Magazine

A Theory of Everything (that Matters)

Alister McGrath
Authors:
Alister McGrath

On 29th May 1919, British astronomers tested Einstein's theory of relativity by measuring the path of the stars travelling near the sun during an eclipse. On 7th November 1919, the results of that experiment were announced in London, proving Einstein's theory of relativity. A Theory of Everything (that Matters) has been written in celebration of this 100th anniversary. With the confirmation of Einstein's theories at the beginning of the twentieth century, our understanding of the universe became much more complex. What does this mean for religious belief, and specifically Christianity? Does it mean, as so many people assume, the death of God? In A Theory of Everything (that Matters) Alister McGrath - Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University - explores these questions, giving an overview of Einstein's thought and scientific theories, including his nuanced thinking on the difference between the scientific enterprise and beliefs outside its realm. This groundbreaking book is for anyone intrigued by Einstein as one of the twentieth century's most iconic figures, who wants to know what his theories mean for religion, and who is interested in the conversation between science and religions more broadly.

Fearfully and Wonderfully

Philip Yancey, Paul Brand
Authors:
Philip Yancey, Paul Brand

Mysterious, intricate, pulsing with energy ... the human body is an endlessly fascinating repository of incredible secrets. In this new work, comprising two classics (Fearfully and Wonderfully Made and In His Image) edited together and updated, renowned surgeon Dr Paul Brand and award-winning writer Philip Yancey take us on a tour of wonder through the human body.Illustrated with stories from Dr Brand's ground-breaking career as a hand surgeon who changed the lives of leprosy sufferers by transforming medical treatment protocols, this lively narrative paints an unforgettable portrait of the incredible unity of the human body in its trillions of parts. As compassionate as he was brilliant, Dr Brand cared as much about his suffering patients as he was intensely curious about how the body works. And so just as his brilliant intuition - which led to medical breakthroughs earning him international awards and acclaim - makes human physiology come alive on the page, so does his deep love for people in their dignity as image-bearers make spirituality come alive on the page as well.Although Brand and Yancey do not presume that readers share their Christian faith, they trace the metaphor of 'one body, many parts' from a medical perspective on human life as well as a mystical perspective on the unifying presence of the Body of Christ. Filled with riveting stories of Dr Brand's work among the marginalized and outcast, this journey of understanding offers astonishing insights and page-turning reading.

Animal Languages

Eva Meijer
Authors:

Dolphins and parrots call each other by their names. Fork tailed drongos mimic the calls of other animals to scare them away and then steal their dinner. In the songs of many species of birds, and in skin patterns of squid, we find grammatical structures . . .If you are lucky, you might meet an animal that wants to talk to you. If you are even luckier, you might meet an animal that takes the time and effort to get to know you. Such relationships can teach us not only about the animal in question, but also about language and about ourselves. From how prairie dogs describe intruders in detail -- including their size, shape, speed and the colour of their hair and T-shirts -- to how bats like to gossip, to the impressive greeting rituals of monogamous seabirds, Animal Languages is a fascinating and philosophical exploration of the ways animals communicate with each other, and with us. Researchers are discovering that animals have rich and complex languages with grammatical and structural rules that allow them to strategise, share advice, give warnings, show love and gossip amongst themselves. Animal Languages will reveal this surprising hidden social life and show you how to talk with the animals.

The Prodigal Prophet

Timothy Keller
Authors:
Timothy Keller

Most people, even those who are nonreligious, are familiar with the book of Jonah: a rebellious prophet defies God and is swallowed by a whale. Less familiar to most people is the second half of this Biblical story--what happens after Jonah is released from the belly of the fish. Yet it is in this second half of the story that one of the most powerful and important lessons of the Bible is hidden. The famous story shows how, if we would understand the mercy of God, it will always take us in directions we would rather not go, toward people we would rather not care about, and ultimately into the deepest counsels of God. In a time of growing division, The Prodigal Prophet shows us God's love among people, and how Christians must listen to God's call even when it takes them to uncomfortable places.

Eternity is Now in Session

John Ortberg
Authors:
John Ortberg

Something in us is waiting - for what, we don't know. Something different? Something better? For Christians, perhaps the deepest expression of what we're waiting for is found in the phrase 'eternal life'. But what is eternal life? Why do we want it? And how do we know if we have it?In Eternity Is Now in Session, bestselling author John Ortberg dispels the myth that eternal life is something way out in outer space that we can only hope to experience after we die - and that being saved is merely about meeting the minimal entrance requirements for getting into heaven. Instead, John unpacks the reality that the moment we trust Christ, we are initiated into 'eternal living' with God as a here and now reality, one that will continue beyond our life on this earth.Jesus defined eternal life just once, in John 17:3: " ... that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." The kind of 'knowing God' that is eternal life is an interactive relationship, not just an affirmation of certain facts about God. Once we begin the transformative journey of truly knowing God, we can start to experience his presence, favour, and resurrection power right here on this earth - in the details, tasks, and challenges of daily, ordinary life. And as we begin to know God this way, we'll realise each moment of our lives is a vehicle to the eternity we've been longing for all along.

Interrupting Silence

Walter Brueggemann
Authors:
Walter Brueggemann

Silence is a complex matter. It can refer to awe before unutterable holiness, but it can also refer to the coercion where some voices are silenced in the interest of control by the dominant voices. It is the latter silence that Walter Brueggemann explores, urging us to speak up in situations of injustice.Interrupting Silence illustrates that the Bible is filled with stories where marginalized people break repressive silence and speak against it. Examining how maintaining silence allows the powerful to keep control, Brueggemann motivates readers to consider situations in their lives where they need to either interrupt silence or be part of the problem, convincing us that God is active and wanting us to act for justice.
