The Secret Lives of Planets

Paul Murdin
Authors:
Paul Murdin

We have the impression that the solar system is perfectly regular like a clock, or a planetarium instrument. On a short timescale it is. But, seen in a longer perspective, the planets, and their satellites, have exciting lives, full of events - for example, did you know that Saturn's moon, Titan, boasts lakes which contain liquid methane surrounded by soaring hills and valleys, exactly as the earth did before life evolved on our fragile planet? Or that Mercury is the shyest planet? Or, that Mars' biggest volcano is 100 times the size of Earth's, or that its biggest canyon is 10 times the depth of the Grand Canyon, or that it wasn't always red, but blue? The culmination of a lifetime of astronomy and wonder, Paul Murdin's enchanting new book reveals everything you ever wanted to know about the planets, their satellites, and our place in the solar system.

The Great War: Walk in Hell

Harry Turtledove
Authors:
Harry Turtledove

This is second part of the Great War trilogy (after American Front) and the 4th volume in Harry Turtledove's epic alternative history of the USA, in which the South is victorious in the American Civil War. It began with The Guns of the South, continues How Few Remain and goes on in Turtledove's American Empire and Settling Accounts sequences. It's 1915, the Great War is intensifying, and the time of darkness has come. The slaves of the south have risen against their masters, taken on the creed of Bolshevism and are attacking the Confederacy from within. But the United States remains pinned between their weakened southern rival, and their other bitter enemy, Canada. But both Presidents - Theodore Roosevelt of the Union and staunch Confederate Woodrow Wilson - are stubbornly determined to lead their nations to victory, at any cost. Meanwhile the new and poisonous weapons of tanks, gas and planes are starting to make their presence felt at the front. It's total war for the first time in human history and it's ordinary people on both sides who are the ones to begin suffer . . . 'The wizard of If.' The Great War: Breakthroughs

Harry Turtledove
Authors:
Harry Turtledove

Is it the war to end all wars - or war without end? It is 1917, and the United States are fighting a war on two fronts. In the north, from the Pacific to Quebec, US forces in the air and on land are locked in battle against Canada and Great Britain. To the south, at the heart of a line that stretches from the Gulf of California to the Atlantic, General Custer intends to do what none of his predecessors have done - to smash through the Confederate lines in Tennessee. Into this vast, seething cauldron plunges a new generation of weapons - submarines, barrels, attack planes, poison gas and flame throwers - changing the shape of war and the balance of power.
