Sceptre has been publishing the finest fiction and non-fiction from around the world for 30 years! We asked Publishing Director Carole Welch to tell us a bit about Sceptre's astonishing achievements over the years.
When Sceptre began life as Hodder & Stoughton’s literary imprint thirty years ago, one of the first titles on the list was Thomas Keneally’s Booker Prize winner Schindler’s Ark, so it is fitting that this year we are launching his new novel, Napoleon’s Last Island. Because our aim is to publish authors and books that will stand the test of time; to nurture talent over the long term; and to offer readers books that we passionately believe are worth their valuable time. This means our taking the time to choose shrewdly, and to edit, design, produce and publish each book with the care and attention it deserves. After all, our authors have spent thousands of hours (not to mention blood, sweat and tears) creating them. These are books intended to last.
So yes, you’ve guessed it: time is the theme of this booklet celebrating thirty years of publishing some of the finest fiction and non-fiction from around the world. We invited our authors to address it in any form they liked – prose, poetry or pictures. It was no surprise that they rose to the challenge and responded with wit, invention, verve and thoughtfulness. With writers like these, readers can look forward to another thirty years of books to capture their imaginations, feed their minds, enrich their lives and, of course, that will stop the clocks!
